I had exactly the same noise in a kitchen a few years back. I eventually tracked it down to the kettle, water was getting into the connector and shorting it. In a way it turned out to my advantage as it was then i discovered that the cooker socket that fed the kettle had no earth connection.

Thanks roughcaster, i bought the stippler today and a small tub of artex repair. I dont know when the job will actually be done but when it is can the artex just be spread on top of the repaired ceiling that has had about 3 coats of vinyl silk.

Is this the artexing tool i need, found at B&Q.

Yeah, i dont think its a normal method of doing things. As you say some method of stopping the pieces of wood sliding down the felt would have been an idea. Took these today, you can just see the tops of the pieces of wood used. Is that easier to visualise, i dont suppose its as good as taking the pics from inside the loft. But it should help a bit.

There is nothing to photograph, as i said the wood disappeared. I will have another look tomorrow and take some pics through the open loft hatch. Its a nuiseance not being able to get in the loft myself.
