    Mini Expansion Vessel?

if you've got a water meter then it's a good idea to get a mini expansion vessel on the cold mains as without it you're more likely to get a leak on the cold in/hot water circuit due to water hammer. if you didn't have a water meter you probably wouldn't need one.

    pump permanently running

could be an intermittently sticking valve, the pipes and boiler will all be hot if that's the case or it could be a faulty pcb as it has a pump live so will power the pump.

    ideal isar

no display is normally a failed pcb, a very common fault on these unreliable boilers and not a cheap part either. 2 years old is about the right time for a new pcb, most don't seem to make it beyond 3 years. check there's power at the boiler then the fuse on the pcb. if both are ok it's...

Ideal ISAR - CH off but radiators are hot - intermittent

the plastic cartridge comes with a spanner to undo it, or at least it did 3 weeks ago when i replaced 1. there's about 3 possible cartridges it could be, ring up ideal and they'll give you the correct part number. the spindle should pop back out nice and easily otherwise it's resting in ch...

    potterton housewarmer 45 ignition

they aren't meant to do that and you'll find that the small minority or contractors would be the culprits. it still needs taking apart and checking inside, but at least you don't tar all the thousands of engineers with the same brush  i've seen boilers serviced by independent people...

    Weedy drill for concrete

i tried drilling in to my garage floor for some fixings the other day, i already had my 18v drill out so used it with a dewalt drill bit, gave up pretty quickly as it barely made a dent and used my sds which went through the floor very easily. if you know anyone with an sds or mains drill...

    Programmable thermostats

i think drayton do a programmable stat that only requires live and switch live. uses a couple of aa batteries so no need for the neutral and can be sited where your existing stat is with no extra wires or receivers added.

    Ideal classic rs50

are you saying it spins until it gets power then it stops? in which case the pump is kaput, otherwise is there enough water in the system?

    istor boiler - advice please!

pcb 150-200 depending where you get it. you can remove the blue tube as it's only pushed on and won't leak gas etc. the isar, icos and istor have 1 or 20 known problems  unfortunately near me loads of houses have been built and many have ideals in and they're no end of trouble...

    potterton powermax's

a well designed push fit flue at the bottom behind the cylinder out of sight that has a tendency to corrode and fall out, beautiful design! why do engineers mess with the gas valves? probably because it says in the instructions if they need adjusting then you can, as long as there's...

    External Boilers

got an attached utility room, garage or a loft? easier to put one in any of them. i think it is possible as i've seen information about a boiler designed to be fitted on balconies i thought it was ferroli or vokera but not sure and tbh if that boiler is as poor as their normal ones i'd keep a...
