    Adding radiators query

I need to add a few radiators to my system for a new extension. My boiler is a Baxi Bermuda inset fire/back boiler. This is 5 years old. In the house I have: 5 off 6' x 2' 6" radiators (singles). 2 off 2' x 2' 6" radiators (doubles). 1 off 2' x 2' 6" radiator (single). I am looking...

    Tanking, aqua panel & skimming.

Thanks Richard. No bath, just a shower cubicle so I'll use Aquapanel & moisture resistant PB elsewhere. I never touch DIY store tile adhesive....... used it once, NEVER again!

    Tanking, aqua panel & skimming.

In my new bathroom extension I was going to use aqua board for the whole room. Having priced it up (& had a sit down....) I've decided to use plasterboard & Aquapanel only in the shower cubicle. The entire bathroom will be tiled floor to ceiling, so....... Do I need to skim the...

    Plasticiser substitute

Washing up liquid was (and sometimes still is) used as a plasticiser. I used it when I built my double garage and also the wall between me & next door. I built both ten years ago & I'm re-pointing them both this year....... Buy some plasticiser, DON'T use anything else it can cause untold...

    Identifying feed & return?

I'm going to fit thermostatic valves to my radiators & I've read that they must be fitted to the feed to work correctly. The previous owner of my house wasn't as competent at DIY as he thought he was & I'm not confident that the existing radiator on-off valves are fitted to the feed. Is...

    Which conduit/trunking to use?

Thanks folks. I was told that I could clip straight to the blockwork, but installing conduit would make life easier in the future IF it should be necessary to replace anything. This is domestic twin & earth. My main concern was actually getting something that will stay fastened to the...

    Which conduit/trunking to use?

....behind dot & dab platerboarded wall? My electrician has asked me to pull the cables through & fasten the trunking to the wall so that he can carry on when he gets back from holiday. No problem, but which is best both from a safety and installation point of view (the walls are celcon...

    plaster or skim?

Buy yourself another sheet of plasterboard & nail it temporarily to the garage wall (inside). Practise on that before you go straight for your newly boarded wall.

Dodgy Roofing Job/Cowboy - Advice Needed!

Sorry, but the OP never stated he wanted a cheap job. He needed work doing & contacted what he beleived to be a "roofing expert". He was quoted a price for what he beleived was going to be a satisfactory job. As he isn't a roofer he had no idea what the cost was going to be. The guy's...

    Which plasterboard & how?

Its a long time (15 odd years) since I used plasterboard, so please refresh/re-educate me! Ceilings. Tapered edge board or square edge? Tape? Skim the whole boards or just the joins? (This is in a bathroom so I'm guessing skim the entire ceiling?) Stud walls. Again, tapered or square...

    Lead flashing equivalent?

Anyone used the flashing equivalent from Ubiflex? The spec seems okay, supposed to be as good as lead but a lot lighter. Is it as good as code 4 lead?

Flat roof repair / re-roof question

Like you, I have had to go the DIY felt approach on my new extension as I've run out of cash & needed to get it waterproof. Please don't get the impression that a DIY job is going to last as long as a decent proffesional torch-on job! I used the Wickes cold applied self-adhesive system. My...

    UPVC beading removal

Okay, prize idiot alert....... I've fitted Spectus UPVC windows (internally beaded) in my new extension & yesterday I noticed that I have somehow managed to fit one glass unit the wrong way round ("K" glass sticker faces outside, it should face inside). What's the easiest way to remove the...

    Self adhesive EPDM over OSB

Self adhesive EPDM can (according to Permaroofs blurb) be used over (new) OSB with no problems. My concern with OSB is that it isn't "smooth". Once primed & the EPDM laid, it will only adhere to the highest point of the leaves of the OSB, leaving small pockets of trapped air elsewhere. This...

    "K" glass markings?

I've just fitted three new windows into my new extension, all have Pilkington K glass. All of the glazed units had the Pilkington sticker on them telling you which side should face into the room, but I can't see any other markings to confirm that it is low-E glass. Should there be any, if so...

    Felting a new roof costs?

My concern with GRP is that if there is any air trapped in the layers, this can expand on a hot day & break through, causing a potential leak. I think I'm going to go the EPDM route as it seems by far the most robust.
