New extension, part "P" & all that........

I'm building a single storey side & rear extension, with full plans approval. As part of this I need to ensure that all the new electrics are part P compliant. When I obtain quotes, what will I be getting for my money? The work will entail approximately seven double sockets, four lights...

Adding work to already approved plans?

I'm building a single storey side & rear extension, which already has planning approval and building regulations approval (full plan approval, not a building notice). As part of this we were simply going to remove the 6' wide patio doors, leaving an opening into the new room at the rear...

    Shower size for 6mm cable?

Well I've just had a proper look and........... the shower (45A MCB) is fed by a 10mm cable. The 6mm cable supplys a cooker socket and is protected by a 32A MCB. So..... 45A MCB, 10mm cable, will I be okay to use a 9kW shower?

    Attaching joists to wall plates?

Thanks. It has got "L" shaped straps securing the plates to the blockwork, one every metre (approximately). What spacing are the twisted straps also required (joists are on 400 ctrs)?

    Attaching joists to wall plates?

On a flat roof, can I simply cross-nail the joists to the wall plates using 100mm nails, or do I have to use twisted galvanised straps? Thanks

    Shower size for 6mm cable?

This installation was done just before we moved into the house back in 1999. What size MCB is recommended to protect a 6mm feed to a shower?

    Shower size for 6mm cable?

Cable total length is around 18 feet. It is clipped to the wall from the C/U and then runs under the floor, before dropping down into a downstairs bathroom. The MCB is 42A.

Building a Garage from concrete hollow blocks

Whatever you do, I'll give you one piece of advice, fit bigger doors! The standard UK single door width is 7', but as cars are now wider its a tight squeeze, so I always recommend that an 8' wide x 7' high door (or doors) is fitted.

My biggest shock yet.....Always prove dead!!

Expert? No, more a case of taking things for granted, assuming that others knew what they were doing and generally taking a risk as "its only a two minute job". Never again. It sometimes takes a near miss to hammer home the fact that you should never assume anything.......

    strength of modern adhesives

Modern adhesives are great, they're now used to bond some car body panels in place rather than spot welding. BUT, the adhesive is only as strong as the material its being bonded to, in your case trying to bond it to painted lining paper isn't going to work. Assuming you get a good bond between...

My biggest shock yet.....Always prove dead!!

I'm R&D Manager for a company that produce cable jointing systems for LV and MV applications. I've seen the arcing that can be present when jointing 230V live (and pickign up load). Not nice. A bit like arc welding but worse, I wouldn't fancy touching that! Anyway, my ex-wife had her house...

Installing a lead flashing - hints and tips needed! (pics)

If you're going to put coping stones on the top, why not just trap the lead underneath rather than cutting a slot? You could also do next doors at the same time (for a price!).

    Flat roof vent advice?

Yes, I've seen those but I was just concerned at having a join/seal between vent and membrane.

Replacing fascia, soffits and barge boards with UPVC

Whatever you go for, DON'T buy any from the DIY chains, it costs at least an arm & a leg! I buy all mine on-line from www.masterplastics.co.uk who offer a good service.

    Flat roof vent advice?

I need to provide cross ventilation to the roof of my new extension (cold deck). The sketch below shows the arrangement. Eaves vents are straightforward, but what can I use to provide ventilation where the roof butts up to the existing house? Thanks
