Replacement for Wickes r63 eyeball downlight

There are 3 Wickes R63 eyeball downlights in my kitchen. The other night, one of the holding clasps (if that's what they're called) broke and the housing fell out of the ceiling. I need to replace this, but can't find anything of the right diameter in the DIY stores I've looked it. The hole...

    Ferroli top-up (very basic)

Thanks a lot. I managed to miss that in the manual and also in the FAQs!

    Ferroli top-up (very basic)

I've read the FAQ but my question is extremely basic and boiler specific. My Ferroli Opitma 901 boiler stopped produced hot water this morning. I had a quick look and it appears the pressure may have gone too low (I need a proper look later when I have more time, and I did check the pilot...

    Vent with insect filter

I want to fit a vent to a wall and I was told it was possible to buy them with insect filters. Do people know if this is a standard product I can get from a builders' merchant etc?

Should I vent from a bedroom into the soffit

Many thanks for that. I'll investigate whether I can fit trickle vents, but if not will vent direct to outside.

Should I vent from a bedroom into the soffit

We have condensation build up on the windows in the bedroom. There are no trickle vents to open and I'd rather not leave the window open all year round. Is it a good idea to drill holes above the lintel and put a vent from the bedroom into the soffit? Will that do "bad" things to the effect...

Damp at top of window cavity - suggestions

I'm learning new things here. Weep vent might be more likely as I see from the internet that they sit above lintels. Checking for blockage seems like a plan.

Damp at top of window cavity - suggestions

Ah, I wonder then if water might be getting in that way. Never having used scaffolding I hadn't heard of this. Thanks.

Damp at top of window cavity - suggestions

I have damp at the top of a cavity that a window is recessed into. I'm probably going to end up getting a ladder up and having a look on the outside and would like some ideas as to what to look for. The window is UPC and (I think) relatively new. The house is 1960s. A little way above each...

Tumble dryer trips consumer unit - dryer or electrics?

Thanks for the quick replies. I suspected as much but it's good to get a second opinion. Have called an electrician.

Tumble dryer trips consumer unit - dryer or electrics?

Our newish tumble dryer keeps tripping the consumer unit. This used to happen sometimes when the washing machine was on at the same time and the dryer was set to high, but last night it happened when only the dryer was on and set to low. Is this most likely to be a fault with the dryer or is...

    Spark from multimeter probe

Pretty sure I had the probes plugged in right but will double check for next time. Wouldn't trust a volt-stick to prove there wasn't any mains, but do use it to prove that there is!

    Spark from multimeter probe

The leads are OK and I'm pretty sure I didn't short the probes togther. I think I'll take the tip and ditch the multimeter in favour of a voltage indicator and proving unit. To be honest, my trusty Volt Stick is good enough for most things I'll ever need to do. Thanks

    Spark from multimeter probe

Yes, I believe the sockets were correct, but it certainly won't heart to look at the manual again. I've tried it on a DC battery subsequently to check a doorbell and it worked ok. It wasn't a big bang, but since I wasn't expecting anything it was brown trousers time! It happened a while ago...

    Spark from multimeter probe

I tried to measure the voltage present at a light switch using a mutlimeter. I had the thing correctly set for 240v AC but when the second probe made contact there was a spark. Was I being a complete muppet in the way I was using it, or does it sound like the meter was rubbish?

    Shower cable, different diameters

I have come across a shower cable that is 10mm from the consumer unit to the pull switch (approx 12ft) and then 6mm from the shower switch to the shower (approx 6ft). The shower is a 9.5kW electric. It looks like the 10mm has been upgraded at some point but the 6mm left in place (presumably...
