Wiring questions - installing new thermostat

A multicore cable, when the outer core is removed to expose the cores, becomes a collection of single core cables as far as identification is concerned. It makes no difference how they are grouped, whether it be singles through conduit or a multi-core flex/T/3C+E/etc - when the cores are...

Wiring questions - installing new thermostat

No I didn't know that, but then that is because it is a false statement. A typical boiler control circuit (internal) or heating control circuit (external) is going to be no more complicated then a typical motor control circuit or building management circuits. Both of which are far less likely...

Wiring questions - installing new thermostat

Electrical installations use conventions. For many years red was used to indicate live and black to indicate neutral in low-voltage AC circuits. There is no technical reason why an installation could not use black for live and red for neutral because, as you say, an electrician will never make...

    Soakaways and Planning Consents

I would think it is unlikely that the enforcement officer will do anything unless it was an explicit condition of the planning permission that it must be (or not be) in any particular position. Unless the land has been raised significantly then surely it is just standard landscaping. If it is...

    Cut Drive - Harrow Council

Are you just asking for the kerb to be dropped so you can use an existing hard surface as a drive that already drains on to the highway? If you are not changing the hard surface at all then it should not be a planning matter at all, only highways, and they will only be concerned with sight...

Using SDS drill to remove screw heads.

That's why I asked if he had access to one - maybe by borrowing from a mate. Most trades use them nowadays and most people know someone who is a either a builder, electrician, plumber, etc.

Using SDS drill to remove screw heads.

Do you have access to an impact driver? They will usually take out stubborn screws even when most of the head has cammed out. On really badly damaged heads use bits with serrated tips to get more grip. Wear eye protection incase the driver bit explodes/shatters.

    Impact drivers

I think you must have a duff box *. I use impacts almost exclusively for driving screws and I've used many thousands of turbo golds in most sizes between 30mm and 150mm and with only one break. It had got so hot that it bent about 30 degrees on the way in and the starting force when later...

Site Radio Makita BMR 100 Batteries

I have the BMR100 and it does not come with a mains lead, however it does have a 12V DC input port on the front so you can run it from a suitable 12V DC power supply. Otherwise it runs from most Makita batteries (see Threadjacker's link for a list for the exceptions, e.g. the 10.8V batteries...

    Quick-curing expanding foam

I need a quick curing expanding PU foam to assist with scaping a marine aquarium. It will be used to infill gaps, etc, but needs to be cured as quickly as possible so the live rock being used will not encounter too much die-off from being out of the water. Can anyone recommend one? My...

    Neighbours Land

It's not a general rule - it is an absolute requirement - to get it legally recorded. Your current neighbour may be happy for for you to build on their land but neither of you will be able to sell your houses to a mortgaged buyer because every solicitor will quite rightly warn against it...

    Block Paving

Ideally you needed the guarantee before work began, but it's a bit late for that now. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but laying the sand on areas that are just clay will result in sinking - no amount of compacting will prevent that. The clay will expand and contract at best 10% and...

Whats the correct name for this uk

Is the OP is asking about the metal bracket holding the metal box to the wooden stud, rather than the US switch plate adapter on the front? In which case surely you would just screw through the side of the box to mount it?

    Joist size for green roof

It doesn't quite work like that. Assuming the OP is not going to be growing grass up there then the plants like sedum, etc, will outcompete the grass and weeds and completely colonise the space. It would only need light weeding a couple of times a year until it becomes established. There...

    Cooker Hood wiring ideas

You would be creating a vertical safe zone with the socket/FCU and the horizontal zone is there from your other sockets and the isolator. Cables must be within the safe zones but you can change direction if needed (bear in mind the safe bending radius for the cable you are using would need to...

    Cooker Hood wiring ideas

You can do it as you've suggested, or you can run the cable horizontally from the isolator to the centre of the cooker hood and then vertically to the FCU. If it is an extractor rather than a recirculator (so will have sealed ducting within the chimney) then you can fit a single socket in the...

    Hardwood Decking attachment to brick?

Cumaru is a beautiful wood - it looks a lot like cedar when untreated but with the benefits a hardwood gives you. Please come back with some photos when you've finished. :) I would sit them on 3mm double glazing spacers every 300mm or so to stop them being permanently damp and screw each...

    Hardwood Decking attachment to brick?

That picture is much clearer. It will need to be drilled, screwed and plugged. What wood is that - it looks like Ipe? Most hardwoods are pretty easy to cut cores from - just select an offcut that has similar colouring to the piece you are drilling and cut a series of plugs from it and sink...

    Plum Trees

It is a little late in the UK season now to be pruning a plum. It is best done in mid summer for established trees else there is a risk you could allow silver leaf disease spores into the cuts. I would leave it until next year or you risk losing the trees.

    Hardwood Decking attachment to brick?

Are you intending to have that one course wall along the front visible, or will it either become you finished ground level on the outside or be faced with the hardwood? If it won't be visible then either raise the deck height by 25mm and use some timber to support the front edge or drill and...
