    Strip and restain wooden floor

We've got a wooden floor in the hall and would like to change the colour to a lighter shade. It was already down when we moved here, so not sure exactly what kind it is, though it isn't laminate. I'm thinking it is stained and then treated. Its only a small area 3m x 3m and wonder what is the...

New conservatory onto existing single story extension

You're right how did miss that  But now we know what they are called I can see its going to be pretty straightforward. Double hipped with gully, thank you, that's it.

New conservatory onto existing single story extension

Already got a full width single story extension and wanting to add a self build half width 'Victorian' style conservatory to it. All the ones I've seen on the buy on line places expect it to be fitted up against the full height of the wall so the back of the roof butts up to it. Our existing...

Double glazing misting problem - but not all the time.....

Regarding sealants, it was in another context (resealing misting car headlamps), that Sikaflex was recommended to me. Would www.sika.ie/ie-tds-Sikaflex_296.PDF be of any use? Mainly used in the marine industry, seems to have a long life, I've seen 30 years quoted, and good water resistant...

    UPVC Patio door hinge replacement

Yes I thought flag looked better, more adjustment should allow a bit more room for error on my part when fitting. To those in know about hinges, is there a preferred make to go for? Nexus seem to have the most adjustment, so was going to get those.

    UPVC Patio door hinge replacement

Now I think I would remove the glass to reduce the weight of the door before attempting to take it off and replace the hinges. I do have another question regarding hinges though. What are the pros and regarding flag or butt hinges? I can use either, though flag might be a better choice as I...

UPVC door with mostly knackered locking mechanism

Oh, one more thing I forgot to say, the cylinder (barrel) is also held in place with a screw. If you look at the edge of the door there is a screw that stands alone, ie not part of a pair, that screws into the cylinder, you have to remove that first. Was so long a go I forgot about that!

UPVC door with mostly knackered locking mechanism

Yes, my door is fitted a euro cylinder lock, take off the handles and it slides out, you just have to turn the key a little so the cam lines up with the gap first. As you turn the key and try to slide it out (either side), you'll feel the cam fit the gap and it will come out. It will become...

UPVC door with mostly knackered locking mechanism

I didn't take the strip off, thought I would try without first in case it all came apart. I just sprayed the places it looked obvious to get inside. It was last year so can't remember exactly which area was the place that had the most effect, though it might have been spraying inside after...

UPVC door with mostly knackered locking mechanism

I had just the same happen with our conservatory door. It slowly became more difficult to turn the handle up to lock it. I gave the mechanism a good spray of WD40 from the outside edge, trying to make sure it went inside to get to the bits that move. I know its not recommended for locks, but...

    UPVC Patio door hinge replacement

We've got an apartment in Turkey, and a UPVC double glazed patio door which opens inwards on butt hinges isn't fitted properly. It doesn't seem quite square and the top of the door scrapes the frame as closes. though lower down there is a gap. The 4 hinges are not adjustable, and also today the...

    DIY sump or block heater?

Yes a water heater would be good, though needs a pump to effectively heat the whole water jacket. According to the commercially available ones, and reports from people using them where they regularly get sub zero temps half an hour is enough, unless you are in the Arctic circle. Of course it...

    DIY sump or block heater?

Every time we get a spell of sub zero temperatures I always get to wishing I had a 240v heater to pre-heat the engine on these cold mornings. Having looked around they can be had for a minimum of a £100 or so and up to £300 or more. I remember my dad had a paraffin sump heater many years ago...

Swirly pattern ceiling, cracked and needing repair

Thanks for the explanation. The proper repair is what we'll do now. I'll strip and prepare it ready for re-taping and skimming.

Swirly pattern ceiling, cracked and needing repair

I took a scraper to it to take the loose stuff off either side, and yes you were both spot on. It's over tape, and the tape has come away from the plaster. It doesn't seem to be wet, or have been wet. Is just because it wasn't 'done right' when the house was built? I'm curious as to why, and...

Swirly pattern ceiling, cracked and needing repair

Thanks to both of you for your replies. There's no movement and it's dry. If I push the ceiling up with my hand it's solid, no give at all, if I push really hard it still doesn't give but I can hear a very slight creak, but I mean push really hard, but still no movement or sign of it giving...

Swirly pattern ceiling, cracked and needing repair

It's a downstairs room, above is a bedroom though it's just a spare room really, not much in there. Here is a pic and close up The long crack is about a metre, only the finish is cracked, the plaster underneath is intact

Swirly pattern ceiling, cracked and needing repair

House is 13 years old and the swirly patterned ceiling in one room has cracked along the line of the joist above it. There doesn't seem to be any reason why that I can discover. The swirly finish has come away from the plaster, so maybe just poorly done in the first place? It needs repairing...

Ideal Logic Plus Combination Boiler - is it any good?

Thank you for the replies. When I searched I couldn't find any threads about these boilers, but since then I have and see now that with them being relatively new and from a company with a very poor reputation in the past, there is not enough to go on. My installer has suggested that a...
