    Worn in trowel

Marshalltown pre worns are the bees knees, expensive but I think fully justified. If you can afford it get a pre worn trowel. Over the last year I had to throw out the old trusty trowels (both Marshalltown) and the switch to the new trowels was hardly noticeable, slight difference in balance and...

Advice on tiling bottom row of tiles

If you start with a full tile off the tray there's no guarantee that the top tile meeting the ceiling will be as near to a full height tile as possible. Theres nothing worse than slithers of tile meeting the ceiling. I always thought you started from a level batten tiled up then cut the...

    Part Plastered ceiling

I agree with Richard, if it is substandard then you should contact the plasterer and explain your concerns ie that unless he makes good the work you will withold all payment. Reskimming the part plastered ceiling is no big deal

    Getting Quotes

For a week I'd say that £1100 is about right - £500 for a weeks labour plus materials good grief how can anyone sustain a business charging those prices. As with all decorating its all in the prep, if the 1st guy talked you thru it and you feel he's good to his word go for it - or as was...

    Why skim plasterboard?

Timber framed building not suitable for uk until recently, you go to the nw usa, where it rains more, snows more and gets hotter summers and all the residential buildings are timber framed. Theres no right or wrong on this one, yes plastered boards are a better finish and what we're used...

    Why skim plasterboard?

Don't know about Oz but in the Staes its still quite unusual to paper the walls - at least in NJ where I lived. They prefer a quick coat of paint, but as has been said its as quick to skim the board as to tape and join it

    angle trowel when to use

Mines a Marshalltown too, tho' rather an old one now. Has yours got 'pre worn' edges? A while ago I got a new corner trowel but I just couldn't get on with it, it didn't have enough spring for me. When I was taught I always used one with lots of spring, old habits I s'pose

Best wet tile saw on a budget? (makes/models)

Plasplugs are fine I'm sure of that but for the extra £20 the Vitrex has an extra 100w of power and more facilities with regards to the fence and angles. Maybe I should sing its praises in a year or so from now though

Painting a brand new front door (Wood)

Dulux 1,2,3 is the way to go - on both sides. As to shooting it in and hanging it, then removing it to paint it, that doesn't make sense. While the various coats of paint dry what is stopping people from walking in to your house. Hang it then paint it - job done :D

Best wet tile saw on a budget? (makes/models)

Just replaced my old workhorse with a Vitrex pro 750 wet saw £99.00 from tile depot, topps tiles also do them. Really smooth motor, hardly any water spray and it has mitre cut facility and angle cuts from 0-45 degrees. I'm really pleased with it - mind you I'm not a pro tiler, but for the...

Kitchen Ceiling - Skim first or Lights first please?

Good advise to draw up a diagram for positioning of downlights - I've been back to 2 customers recently who after I'd skimmed the ceiling they drilled the hole saw straight into rafter as they couldn't remember the correct positions for lights. Very annoying and fiddley job to patch up stray...

    tiling over plumbing joints?

Rightly or wrongly the fact is there are millions of concealed comp fittings and push fits throughout the country. Ideally there should be access to them but thats usually not practical, if you cannot easily make an access area to your fittings tile straight over them or replace with solder joints.
