    garage conversion

Crikey! are you psychic - there is actually going to be a keyboard (musical that is) in the office as well as various other neighbour annoying instruments. Thats why I need to consider the acoustics.

    garage conversion

Hi, hoping I can get some advise on the following. I've looked thru old threads but can't find anything about this - I want to convert single skin garage to an office. My main objective is to reduce the acoustics from the garage, so therefore would like to have acoustic graded insulation all...

    handling worktops

Worktops are heavy and cumbersome. Whenever I fit Oak or Iroko (or Beech) I always have some one to help with moving them around. There nothing so buttock clenching as swinging 3.1 m of oak around a kitchen. Every time the edge takes a slight knock is more time sanding and making right. Get...

    plaster vs tape an joint.

I lived in New Jersey for several years and can say that taping and joining is a very satisfactory way of lining interior walls, just the same as it is in the UK. Even if you skim the plasterboard all the board joins should be taped to reduce the chances of hairline cracks. My personal opinion...

    Tanking a toilet!!

It could also be dangerous - sitting there with a massive hangover doing what needs doing and splash , the whole toilet collapses. You could be injured and it will be very messy

    Building my own door

Great post but why build your own door. I lived in New Jersey for a number of years and there is no doubt the US standard of house building is far superior from the UK standards. You hang a door in the US there is no scrimping and saving. They say what they want and you deliver. In the UK you...

    Roofing quote

Scaffold doesn't have to be used but any roofer worth his salt will not go on to do ridges without one. Regarding the quotes if they're reputable as you say then ask them to do the work. You will always get a cheaper quote - if you believe they will meet your standards go with them.

    Plastering

One coat ? the grain is too sharp - to grainy. You never get a pro finish with that stuff. As said 2 coats of multi will do the job.

Skimming - one or two coats?

always 2 coats. its the only way to even up the surface

    Who's in the wrong?

Your as bad as each other. He can't be accused of muppetry for his lack of English. You could be accused of employing a muppet to do the job  If the outlet sold you the wrong stuff then you have a legitimate claim, hard to prove but with a bit of conviction they will roll over. Next...

    Plaster Problem

Has it completely dried out? You shouldn't have had to 'sand it' after the spread was finished. Your looking at render then skim so it needs time to fully dry back.

    Skimming with one-coat plaster

You need to finish with multi finish plaster. As was said - one coat plaster is far too coarse for a paint finish. Wooden float? for rendering maybe

    Artex ceilings

I've found that its better to skim and then drill the holes for the downlighters, it just looks neater. If you cut holes first then skim you never seem to get a nice neat aperture for the lights, bits of plaster dried to the edges of the holes etc. If you can get access to the ceiling from...
