    moving position of washing machine

washing machines are usually 600mm wide and generally they will fit under the work surface. so check the height of machine and underside of work-top, will it fit under ? Next check the depth of the machine and the depth of the worktop (front -back), you don't want the machine to stick out...

    Push button WC flush valves.

try to go for a popular brand from a plumbing merchant, these all plastic valves I consider to be semi-disposable, a bit like errr..........jug kettles, steam irons, vacuum cleaners etc.

    Outside stop tap

I recently used a boundary box stop tap. The gland failed and the "box" filled with water. This means there is a risk of contamination. Customer told water board he was having to boil his water. Thet came and fixed the stop tap next day.

    cast iron stack

would be a lot easier to repace with a new plastic stack. Or if the loo is not on an outside wall, a new drain.

    hot tap draining

you could hire a pipe freezer. or buy a freezing aerosol in a can. You need to work quick with the later though.

    Tape or Sealant

I have found that putting ptfe tape on the olive of a new compression joint means that the friction sound of the olive biting can't be heard and I over-tighten the joint, deforming the pipe, and it leaks. However as has been said I always put a couple of turns on the olive with an old joint...

fitting out a new en-suite room in loft

Neither,........ he would not have the appropriate NIC certificate for his selling pack or whatever and his house would be worthless.......Right :?: He needs to get a qualified person who knows how to drill holes, cut and strip wire properly. As for the RCCD, like Kev says most CU's have...

HELP !!!!!!!!SHOWER SPEED FIT ELBOW SUPPLIED WITH NEW SHOWER

can you not extend the pipe using a yorkshire (solder ring) coupler. Soldering these is not difficult. Protect the wall behind with a damp heat mat. If the job is really tight, a soldered copper elbow can be removed by heating until the solder melts. The pipe stub can be cleaned with wire wool.

    Plumbing Courses

why not take a course in autocad and do a HNC in building studies. An architectural technician is an easier and cleaner job and comes with a pension. Why have the ball ache of being on the tools when you can sit in a nice clean office drawing the job. Most domestic plumbing work is done...

    Sink fixing clips

I my experience most vendors don't supply nearly enough sink clips to get a good result. Lucky for me my favorite local plumbing merchant sells packets of spare clips. I think the clips are fairly standard for s/s sinks.

fitting out a new en-suite room in loft

Thats a good sugestion Agile. Remember a 12Kw water heater is gonna need a long length of fat copper wire running up from the consumer unit off a dedicated mcb (fuse). with big socialist brother's Part P that ain't gona be a DIY job. If it were my basin, I'd go with Kev's kettle and get up...

    low flow lockshield valve

If the system is designed with a larger temp drop (20 not 11'c) then I believe I am correct in suggesting the mean temp of the rads will be less. Using a Mears calculator then, the temperature difference between the mean temp of the rad and the room will be less and therefore a larger rad is...

    low flow lockshield valve

I wonder if putting in a radiator at the end of the return pipe plumbed in "single pipe system" style would help :?: I've never done this incidently :!:  I wonder then how many installations are going to run in condensing mode when producing hot water only. or is it easy to get...

    Disastrous Bathroom Refit

sounds about right considering the quality of fittings available today. Who made the hole in the cast iron stack ? this is the root of the problem. You could always just re-root the waste pipe out through the wall into an open hopper if there is one. This would contravene current building...

    Removing old olives

or open an adjustable wrench to the diameter of the pipe. Use the wrench like a hammer sliding it down the pipe onto the nut to knock off the olive. won't always work, nothing will if the joint was grossly over tightened.

    Installing new washing machine.

pipe size should be 40mm. drill hole using a hired diamond core drill. run pipe out through wall before gas cooker, I have in the past run sections behind gas cookers but converted the pipe into 40mm copper for this short run. The 1m length of copper is expensive though. If the pipe...

boundary stop tap - leaking gland

AArrrrrrghh, customers stop tap not working, so I turned off supply using the boundary box stop tap, I turned it back on and the gland is leaking badly, the clay pipe 'box' is full of water. When I quoted for the job he showed me were the house stop tap was and told me it worked fine, I had...
