    Concealing copper pipework

if its an external wall and your up north then put then run some conduit onto the pipes were they are under the plaster. they make flexible plastic conduit (pipe) specially for the job. It stops the plaster cracking when the pipe gets hot and stops the wall getting soaked when they burst due...

    Tap leaking

sounds like a spacer or gasket was not fitted when the tap was installed. Call back the installer if done recently. The tap should not move by 5mm out of the hole. I'd say the chances of getting a lasting, tidy seal without removing the tap and reinstalling are slim.

    Trench blocks - dims?

check out the Thermalite or Celcon web sites. The height and length of these blocks are usually the same as a standard building block (215mm x 440mm). the width of these blocks varies depending on the width of the cavity. At the moment the regulations are such that most builders are using...

    Pointing Welsh Stone

traditional lime mortar might be a solution. Its whats used in every building before the victorian era (1880's) and plenty of cathedrals etc are still standing. If the existing mortar is white, then chances are it's what was used for the wall originally. Buy a couple of bags of hydrated lime...

    Rising Damp

when was the house built :?: has anyone looked under the floor boards in the area :?: is it brick walls :?: is the rain water pipe, soil pipe or gutter leaking, :?: (go out and have a look during the next downpour) or loft cistern overflowing, or old underground water supply pipe...

    Lines in plaster

I think you need to "break in" your trowel. You can get them ready broken in but they come at a premium. i'm not a plasterer but I guess you could try and smooth the corners off the trowel by running it over an area of old render e.g. inside the garage etc. or with sand paper.

    Gas pipework - copper alternatives?

Every time I read a gas post on here everyone loves to give the poster a good slagging off. I guess it's good sport ? As far as I can see the worst thing that can happen is that the pipe can leak, so why the fuss ? Before 1980's any tom dick and harry could charge to do this work in other...

    Sloppy pointing

tell him if he can't lay the bricks to your satisfaction you'll have to get someone more expert and that he can remove the shoddy work he's already done and pay for replacement bricks. That should do it.

Wet Black soil around where lead water supply comes in +damp

I'd say the clay drain trap (or gully) has cracked or the joint has cracked (if the drain is not blocked). you could extend the waste pipes to enter the trap/gully below the level of the cover (replace iron cover with plastic one with pre-formed holes). If this fails to dry the soil up, I...

    crumbling bricks

spalling brick faces are very common and something you just have to live with. don't repoint with a modern strong portland cement mortar, it will make the problem worse. If you have the balls for it remove baddly spalled bricks with their stretcher face on the outside face of the wall...

    Do I need an architect?

Ask a neighbour, relative or friend who has had an extension done, if you can borrow their plans to see what is required. I am not a builder or architect and have just had plans for a single storey 9 x 8 ft extension which I prepared myself approved by the council building control, so it can...
