    correct position of roof vents.

Once again the most straightforward help I could've asked for. Could I pick your brain further? So am I ok to duct straight out of the soffit even though I have eaves vents fitted? I'm hopefully going to duct two bathrooms together out of the same soffit point. Using two backdraught stops in...

    correct position of roof vents.

Morning all, Looking to fit a tile vent in a Marley ashmore roof for bathroom extraction. We've just had the roof redone using cromar vent 3 pro membrane and ashmore tiles with a dry ridge/hip system and intended on putting the extraction vent in the soffits but are unsure if this would be ok...

Thanks for the replies John, I know that the manufacturers are trying to cover their backsides by saying that all tiles must be mechanically fixed but this is also to do with the more aggressive weather conditions that we now get in blighty. There are some small cuts at the valleys and I have...

    roofing questions and worries

Thanks for the reply, I think that the bulk of the house is around 40 degrees and the front extension roof is maybe 35. I can't understand why they haven't just put another row in to increase the headlap as there are 3 packs of tiles spare. Actually I have an idea why they haven't.

Thanks as usual Woody, I've only just found out about the BS5535 spec and am now a bit worried for what implications it might have if a tile blows off in the future but two thirds of the roof is now tiled and I'm unsure how to progress. I've been up and checked in the dark tonight (don't...

    roofing questions and worries

Thanks for the replies all, the most annoying thing is that when I asked the lads they've said "yes we're nailing them" but then when I notice there are still loads of bags of nails left it rang alarm bells. I totally agree, it doesn't take long to just do the job properly and they obviy know...

    roofing questions and worries

Afternoon all, I've got another thread running but I was suggested to start a new one here in the hopes that someone could help me out. We're currently having Marley ashmore tiles fitted and the roofer has stated that he's nailing the eaves tiles and every third row. Initially I though this...

Work had progressed from the last post of dodgy brickwork. We're now tiling the roof after some drama but I wanted to ask some of the roofing folk on here for their advice. We're having Marley ashmore tiles fitted and the roofer has stated that he's nailing the eaves tiles and every third row...

Thanks for the replies. Have spoken to them today regarding our thoughts on the brickwork and the better one of the pair of builders has agreed to take over the brick laying from now on. The side of the house pointing looks appalling and although it will only be the neighbours that look at it...

Morning all, Brick laying has started (between the rain), We're upto about 9 courses but we have noticed a difference between the two builders laying methods. The first one is laying full beds of mortar front and back and doing a tidier job whilst the second builder isn't and the brickwork...

You might aswell be Woody, I'm losing faith in these guys by the day. Just noticed that some of the joists literally have small bits of brick underneath them, which seeing as they're walking on the first floor now doesn't seem like it's doing much as the bits are falling out leaving a gap...

As always, thanks for the reply woody. I'll get the ply in tonight. Are the joists ok to be packed with slate and then mortared into place, the ones they've done previously seem loose in the pockets but admitted the noggins aren't all in yet. Plan is to use Fibolites for the inner leaf of...

Evening all, I thought my account had been compromised but it looks like 247 Developers might be a bot? Thanks for the replies. So I informed the builders that the joists were too low and they reluctantly agreed to raise the height of the newly installed steels and joists to suit the existing...

    upcoming extension advice

Just an update and a few more questions. Steels have gone in across the piers and the builders have packed them with slate but maybe only a 100mm square under each pier. Assuming they're going to mortar up the rest of the area but with there being a 440mm wide platform shouldn't more of this...

    upcoming extension advice

Yes builders are planning on installing the floor straight away and working off that so there will be load on it but will try to keep it to a minimum until the three courses of fibolites are laid and cured. Steels in on Monday, they're planning on installing the steel via genie lift then...

Thanks again, Good plan with the lath, got plenty lying about. The thinking behind the 4x2 was to support vertically so that the hanger rear doesn't lift up from the steelwork once the joists are hung and the blocks are initially being laid. I can't take them moving much as there won't be a...

Morning all, can someone confirm that this is the best method of fitting the joists within the new insulated void. Does what I'm proposing make sense? Or is there a better way? Can we additionally prop the joists with say 4 X 2 before the 3 courses of block are laid above to support them and...

I should rewrite it really. The new steel is basically going to sit on a 220mm ledge (when finished). Should have just wrote that earlier There are 4 piers to support the steel across an 8m length, each pier being 440mm wide X 220 deep

I hope not! No it will be fully bearing on the 210mm brickwork beneath it, hard to see on the photo but the piers are now in effect 300 deep.

So here's what I was thinking, I've drawn a bit of something to run it past you guys and see if it makes sense. Plan is (hopefully) to use a 225mm deep hanger which are 10mm short apparently making it 215mm. The beam is 203 so that will leave a 12.5mm gap between the steel and the plasterboard...
