Thanks @JobAndKnock but as I said, I’ve not been able to remove the profile without damaging it so replacing it isn’t an option. Therefore I need to know how to finish the different heights of stringer and skirting without the trim.

thanks for your comments. Totally not interested. We live in a rural setting so we don’t have neighbours to bother and as I said, it will barely be used so it’s mostly aesthetic. But you clearly feel the need to ignore the fact that I’d already explained that.

The rooms are being let as separate tenancies as an HMO (so not to a group of friends, to separate individuals who don't know each other), so I don't think that's really an option. I need to find a way to make it work as I know it would put me off if I was looking for a room.
