    Supporting joists under bouncy floor

Just lifting boards now so will confirm subfloor when we get to it. Truthfully I can’t remember what’s under there.

    Supporting joists under bouncy floor

Thanks @oldbutnotdead. The subfloor is earth, though I believe they hit sandstone when digging so mostly rock with a bit of earth on top I suspect. There is insulation so we’ll have to cut that out and put back and retape after, but it’s just celotex between the joists so shouldn’t be too...

    Supporting joists under bouncy floor

We recently had a kitchen extension done to our Edwardian house and went with suspended timber floors so we could run exposed floorboards through the house to match the other rooms. We had no issues until the kitchen was fitted and heavy quartz worktops installed last week, and now suddenly the...

    Stair stringer to skirting transition

@JobAndKnock you’re not here, I am. I’ve taken it off. It’s splintered, twisted and ruined. It doesn’t fit anymore. It’s taken way more time than I can afford to give it anymore. It won’t work. It was done with the utmost care and a great deal of damage to the plaster. It didn’t come off intact...

    Stair stringer to skirting transition

Thanks @JobAndKnock but can we get back to answering my question which wasn’t about removing the trim but how to finish off without the trim. Whilst you won’t believe it can’t be removed I’m afraid you’re wrong. Is anyone else able to offer a solution please to finishing the end with the trim...

    Stair stringer to skirting transition

Thanks @JobAndKnock but it really won’t come off. The Brad nails are in deep and are splitting the wood badly before they come out of the wall. We have all the tools and plenty of experience but this is just one where we have to admit defeat. So I have to find another solution. I know you think...

    Stair stringer to skirting transition

Thanks @JobAndKnock but as I said, I’ve not been able to remove the profile without damaging it so replacing it isn’t an option. Therefore I need to know how to finish the different heights of stringer and skirting without the trim.

Happy to leave it off @JobAndKnock, just can’t work out how to finish off

    Stair stringer to skirting transition

We’re renovating a Victorian house. One of the things I need to fix is that at some point (long long ago from the amount of dirt) the staircase has dropped slightly and the trim along the top of the stringer that runs in line with the tops of the skirting board has stayed in the original...

Any way to remove fireplace insert without removing fireplace?

Hi, is there any way to remove the metal insert (the black but with the red tiles) from this slate fireplace (the white bit) without taking out the fireplace itself? There’s no chimney above so it can’t be used and we’d like to widen the space inside the fireplace to store logs for the other...

Is it possible to alter this fireplace to have an open fire?

@cwhaley I think you're right, the fireplace looks original. The house has only had 2 owners and has been amazingly well looked after and everything is in remarkably good condition for a house 110 years old. I can see the brickwork behind the stove and its in very good condition indeed. The...

Is it possible to alter this fireplace to have an open fire?

@robinbanks is your aim just to come on here to ignore things people have outright stated (such as we don't light the fire more than a couple if times a year) and instead just be unhelpful and sarcastic? We drive an electric car (and drive very little), don't fly, have a highly insulated house...

Is it possible to alter this fireplace to have an open fire?

thanks for your comments. Totally not interested. We live in a rural setting so we don’t have neighbours to bother and as I said, it will barely be used so it’s mostly aesthetic. But you clearly feel the need to ignore the fact that I’d already explained that.

Is it possible to alter this fireplace to have an open fire?

The house we're currently renovating has this fireplace and log burner I know its not fashionable, but we'd really like an open fire and not a log burner. But we don't want to reinstate the existing fire insert and have a small victorian fireplace. What we want is something like this - a...

How to remove this fireplace without damaging?

I’ve removed several fireplaces over the years so I’m fully aware where fixings usually are- top and bottom of either side. There is nothing there. We’ve removed a substantial amount of plaster. There is no indication of anything in the plaster.

How to remove this fireplace without damaging?

There’s nothing to see- don’t really need the internet to tell me to look for visible fixings Was just hoping someone might know some info about specifically slate fire surrounds that would give some insight into how they are installed. As I already said, even digging around in the plaster...

How to remove this fireplace without damaging?

We have an Edwardian fireplace in our house that we need to remove as we’re knocking through two rooms. It’s lovely and we’d like to move it to another room in the house so I’d like to remove it without damaging. But having dug around in the walls I can’t find out how it’s attached - there don’t...

Combi and two showers best options without cylinder

The rooms are being let as separate tenancies as an HMO (so not to a group of friends, to separate individuals who don't know each other), so I don't think that's really an option. I need to find a way to make it work as I know it would put me off if I was looking for a room.
