    Changing a wall socket

If there are tennants involved then get a professional in. Someone with greater knowledge will be along soon but water getting into a socket wouldn't always mean changing the socket will be the right repair. The short created by the water entering the socket may have knackered the cable...

How 'thin' can i make an external cavity wall?

Glad you're not my neighbour. I wouldn't advise sneaking over the boundary even if it's only 2cms, could be a legal minefield.

    Cap stones on garden wall

Drill the cap stones underneath, insert some rawl pulgs and put some galvanised screws in so that they are sticking out by about 5mm. Then mix your mortar and mortar the cap stones back on. The screws will help make them less liable to being pushed off.

    what is this pipe?

Could you try listening to the pipe. Turn on a cold water tap and then put a metal bar or long screwdriver on the pipe, then putting your ear on the other end you may be able to hear water moving through the pipe. Much like a doctor would do with a stethoscope.

    insulation for suspended floor

I just did a suspended floor, with the underside being exposed to the outside air. I used 50mm Cellotex, nice tight fit, then put fibreglass (rockwool) insulation on top. You can't even tell the floor is exposed to the outside air, even in winter!
