    CEntral Heating & Thermostats

Ah OK - but, if I turn the heating off manually at the programmer (by setting it to OFF), the heating does go off - and, when I have the programmer set to Hot Water ON, Central Heating OFF, I do only get hot water, not heating as well - does it sounds as though the motorised valve is working? -...

    CEntral Heating & Thermostats

Sounds fun :-) I have a multimeter, what am I testing for? If I turn the heating off at the programmer, it does go off, so I am assuming the motorised valve works - if I understand it correctly, the programmer controls the valve, and the thermostat informs the programmer - so if I can use the...

    CEntral Heating & Thermostats

Hi all, Quick question, just to make sure I'm not going mad! I have just moved into a new house - it's got a boiler in about 10 years old, with a British Gas UP1 programmer, and there is a thermostat on the wall in the hall - a REALLY old Honeywell one, with the temperature in fahrenheit -...

    Burnt Cooker Control Unit

Okay thanks for the advice - just hope that I have enough slack in the wire!

    Burnt Cooker Control Unit

Hi, My cooker has stopped working, and, having taken the front off the cooker control unit, I can see that one of the wires between the CCU and the cooker itself has burnt and broken. It's fairly well burnt - the insulation is all flaky, and there are big black burn marks around it. My...

    Gassing off

Hi all, I recently (well - May) had a new boiler fitted - a sealed system. Since it's got cold and the heating's started coming on, I can hear what sounds like a trickling noise coming from the airing cupboard, where the hot water tank is. Occasionally, I also get noices that sounds like air...

    Honeywell SmartFit 3 port valve

Hi all, Have had a new Central Heating system professionally fitted, and am generally pretty happy with it - however, I have a question about the three port valve. How loud are they supposed to be? The airing cupboard backs on to the bedroom, and I can hear it whirring when the heating...

Honeywell Smartfit Thermostat Optimum Start Question

Yes - sorry - that's me being ignorant! It is the Smartfit system - I thought they were the same thing! It's definately Smartfit, because I've got the box, and the Smartfit control box in my airing cupboard. Sorry! Does that make more sense?

    Quote for a new Boiler

Just a quick one to say thanks for all your responses and advice - I went with the quote in the end, it's all been completed today, and they've done a good, neat and tidy job - I'm really impressed! Now all I need is for it to get cold, so I can actually get some use out of it....!!!

Honeywell Smartfit Thermostat Optimum Start Question

Hi chaps, Just had a nice new central heating system fitted, and am really pleased with it! They've fitted the Honeywell CM67 thermostat with Optimum Start, and I have a question about how it works. Now, I understand how it works with the heating - that's all fine - it learns when to come...

    Quote for a new Boiler

Thanks for all the advice - much appreciated! ACOperson, am sure you're not that dodgy :-) But we've had real problems getting professional seeming companies - out of six companies, three didn't bother to send through a quote at all, one chap was more interested in trying to convince me to...

    Quote for a new Boiler

The company is failry large, I think - they do come across as very professional, and have placed a heavy emphasis on making all the components work together as a system, which is something that I thought was quite important. I know I can get the Vaillant alot cheaper, but they won't fit that...

    Quote for a new Boiler

Hi all, Am finally getting round to replacing a (very old) GlowWorm Fuelsaver Mk II Boiler, and just want to run the quote past you chaps to see what you thought - have actually had about 6 people round, and these are the only outfit who seem to present themselves as professional, and who...

    Hot CH expansion tank!

Have been advised that my problem is most likely due to the configuration of my pipes - I have a pipe that goes straight up from the pump to the cold feed, and tees off to go to the vent, and then the boiler - apparently, it shouldn't go straight up to the cold feed, it should go round a corner...

    Hot CH expansion tank!

Good idea - will give that a try tonight and let you know how it goes!

    Hot CH expansion tank!

Here's a thought - if I put my hand over the end of the vent pipe, to stop it drawing in any air, it will draw in water from the F&E tank - therefore no airlock, and flow can continue as normal - which might shift my partial blockage?

    Hot CH expansion tank!

That makes sense.....I have no idea how to go about checking for that though! Maybe it's time to call someone in, but that goes against everything I stand for! Sorry about the two threads, but as the first one was for a different problem, I thought it would be better to start a new one for...

    Hot CH expansion tank!

Right - air is entering the vent pipe when I turn the heating on, as the water in the cup disappears up the pipe. Also, the level in the feed and expansion tank drops by about 1 cm when I turn the heating on, so it's drawing in water too. I think what then happens is that the air gets...

    Hot CH expansion tank!

There is a motorised valve, but it's never worked since I moved in three years ago - it's always been stuck on for both CH and HW - we just turn the rads of individually when we don't want heating! The radiators are getting warm at the moment, and the hot water is still hot - the pipe into...

    Hot CH expansion tank!

Don't think so - the arrow on the pump points downwards, so everythings on the suction side. Also, this has just started to happen since I drained and refilled the system - wonder if something's got clogged?
