    Woodfiller

Hi, just recently had our lounge replastered and new skirting boards and picture rails put up. The skirting is MDF, the picture rail is wood. Both are secured with screws. I want to paint them gloss white. Is there a preferred filler that can be used to fill the screw holes, and to cover the...

    Strange goings on under floor

Unfortunately, I’m at work at the moment and the photo hosting web-site (Photobucket) is banned so I can’t see the pictures. What I can say though is that the floor above the lounge is very solid – no bounce at all. Wish I could say the same for the floor in the hallway! If you look at the...

    Strange goings on under floor

Sorry about the delay. The first picture shows the thickness of the metal - the second shows the 'room' itself. Hopefully this uploading of pictures has worked. G

    DANGEROUS HEATING TURNED OFF

Need more details before views can be given. I used to work for BG (albeit 15 years ago – and in the office) and then we used to have Blatantly Dangerous Installations (BDI – pronounced beady eye) and Potentially Dangerous Installation (PDI). A BDI would be stuck on say an appliance with...

    Strange goings on under floor

Thanks for the answers. The house is bay windowed with the joist ends in the bay so the answer regarding bay windows could be the case here. I may have found the answer to the ‘room’ under the lounge bit too. When I pulled up the nailed down floorboards on top of the original floorboards, I...

    Plasterer in South Yorks

Where abouts in S Yorks? I've just used one in Sheffield (West side of Sheffield but he was from High Green) and he did a good job - very tidy too and turned up and time. G

    washing machine waste problems

A few further details are needed. When your sink blocks, is it completely blocked or slow running. Is it still blocked now? Did you replace the waste pipework like for like or did you change routes or anything? I’m not sure whether the washing machine outlet should make an airtight seal...

Need to do a bodge job on CH

Quite – never mind, “We’re only making plans for Nigel”. Back on subject. As I see it, I’ve got two options. I could try the bung method, however, the pipes that I’ll be cutting are horizontal so are more likely to let air in on that leg. May try that together with the 'do it quick'...

Need to do a bodge job on CH

I need to remove the pipe-work above floor level to a radiator in our lounge. Normally, I’d drain the system, cut the pipes under floor and put two end stops on – maybe even put some in-line valves a bit before the end caps so that when I come to put a new radiator in place, I don’t need to...

    Strange goings on under floor

Hi I live in a 1930’s semi. I’m currently doing a few repairs and needed to go under the downstairs floor to prepare for doing these repairs. I have notice a few oddities though. 1. The distance to the bottom of the void beneath the house is about 14 inches. There seems to be a concrete...

    Yet another LOST KEY question

Seems a bit silly. I'm no thief but I know a little trick of how do get a key cut without having the original key. G

    Does Colour Matter

Is installing an extractor fan in a bathroom part of part P? What if the fan is in the roof space and the ducting simply terminates in the bathroom? G

    Fence posts, preservatives, et el.

OK, going to put the posts in this weekend. I’m not a slow worker, it’s just I’ve had another major job on (had to have the living room plastered from floor to ceiling – including the ceiling, including first fix electrics and removal of a nailed down floating floor). Some of the fence posts...

    Yet another LOST KEY question

Forgive my ignorance but, if that's how you program them, why not just do that to nick the nice new car around the corner?

    Confused by Part P

An expert will be along shortly but I'm sure that you will need a certificate - not just for a home information pack but also - what if there's an accident? Was it a reputable electrician, if so I would have thought he'd issue you with some document as soon as you ask him. As mentioned...

    'Fence-ographics' and installation pedants.

Off topic a bit Not sure what the initials SDS stand for – STOP PRESS, just Googled and it said “Special Direct System”. Anyhow, if you buy one, it must have rotary stop on it. This means you can use it in chisel mode. Rotation speed under normal use is slow, about 800 rpm. Impact rate is...

    'Fence-ographics' and installation pedants.

Have you thought of the following? For your gravel board – why not make one out of wood. Preserve it well – it won’t last as long as concrete but you’ll be able to change it in ten years when it’s finally given up on you. Not sure how easy it is to lift a 6’ panel out of a slide in system –...

    Plastering

I’m being a bit thick here. Was discussing my plans at lunchtime with a colleague and said I was off to Wickes to pick up boxes – but probably not the conduit as it comes in 3m lengths and I wouldn’t be able to get thought the revolving doors at work!!! Anyhow, he mentioned that he would have...

    'Fence-ographics' and installation pedants.

Having just taken out a rickety panel fence with 8 or 12 inch concrete gravel boards, I can advise that the ones that I had were re-enforced with steel along the edges. Not sure if this will scupper your plans somewhat. G
