at what point does lining paper become priority...

Lining paper will likely just show the edges of the paint, the wall needs prepped first. So, scrape, fill, sand, more filling, more sanding. I no longer use lining paper, I use Zinsser Guardz. After wall prep, I brush Guardz on, emulsion it and see if anything shows, then fill and sand. Don't...

    Quick books

I bought Quickbooks 2005 and used it for a number of years. It ran well and worked well. I had the advantage of doing accountancy for 4 years as a job many moons back. But as Windows got further and further updated, the product stopped working. I think accounts packages are just online and your...

Building regs on timberwork for roof windows

If you're taking out a rafter (trimming it), then you double up the side rafters. If it's new build, double rafters would be inserted at the start. A roof on a new build comes under regs, but it's normally following the manufactures plans and building regs have a look when the timbers are...

    Beading alternative for kitchen units?

Any floor covering containing wood (includes MDF) requires an expansion gap. You can buy composite flooring that's exactly like standard laminate but it doesn't need a gap. Score it with a knife and snap it. Use a hand saw, jigsaw on it as well. The underlay is already attached to the back.

adhesive and trowel size for quarry tiles

Yes, always notch the floor with the 20mm trowel. I would also skim the back of the tile with adhesive (like a plaster skim thickness), then butter the tiles and fit. You can use rapid if you want, just keep making small batches as you go along. It'll be a powdered adhesive and just ask at the...

    loft insulation advise please

Kingspan (or similar brands) is about 3 to 4 times that of loft insulation. So if you could get up 100mm Kingspan in, that'll equate to 300mm loft insulation. Flat roofs have 120mm in, so the more you can get in, the better.

Oak worktop on the wall as a splashback

It's probably lighter or similar in weight than several boxes of wall tiles. The weight is downward, so it's weight is resting on the worktop below it. I would just say it's just a case of adequately sticking it to the wall. I would leave it in the kitchen for a few days to acclimatise, then...

Untreated wooden door & exposure to elements

Well, wooden doors do alter with moisture and temperature, but to what extent, unknown. They can bind in the winter and be fine in the summer. Best to treat then before being hung, then after they've been hung, you've only have the hinge areas, lock and possible planed edge to brush.

    Old dead chimney

I don't know why people block chimneys up, they're great for creating excellent airflow in the house. If they get blocked off and not adequately vented at the top and bottom on each flu, the air in the stack condenses the moisture and damp problems often appear. If it was my house, I would...

Need help with floor level issues

Along the full lengths of the joists, fix roof laths 10mm below the top of the joists on both sides of each joist. These laths will be at the same height as the joists in the old part of the house. Where the new chipboard comes in contact with the joists, use a router to rebate the chipboard by...

Is the EV really carbon neutral?

For 6 months, don't charge from home and you can't park on your drive. Let everyone know how you get on. I shall pop down to the end of the garden and pick some notes off the money tree. In the current economic times, solar panels will not to on many family's budgets. Neighbour had a solar...

Glue mdf to underside of stairs?

I was at a manufacturing joiners the other day. When they make stair cases, they say MDF is better for the risers and threads because it doesn't shrink. Solid wood shrinks and stairs creek. If it's just joints and cracks you want to seal, just caulk them up and paint it.

Is the EV really carbon neutral?

A diesel/petrol car creates x amount of carbon, from manufacturing to running and maintaining it, to it's disposal. To manufacture an EV, to running and maintaining it, to to it's disposal, the overall carbon footprint is only 17% to 30% less than the diesel/petrol version. The hassle of an EV...

Is the EV really carbon neutral?

If we all switched to EV's, it's predicted that the UK's carbon emissions will reduce by 12%. I think EV's reduce petrol and diesel emissions by 17% to 20%. Not much to be honest compared to the hassle that EV's bring.

    Conservatory Blinds Fabric

As I said, you can by the vanes and headrails separately. So as you just need the vanes, just buy the vanes. The vanes will have the little plastic hangers slid in them, they are only pence, whether you need them or not, the vanes come with them. Are you a dentist?

    Sub floor Joist Setting Out

Well, nothing wrong with what you've outlined, it'll work. With the price of wood, it'll be cheaper to cut the perimeter wall and use joist hangers so you can do away with most of your timbers in blue. Just glue all the chipboard together, no noggins required. Doesn't really matter where you...

Glue mdf to underside of stairs?

You could trim the pegs that hang below the underside of the risers and fix a board under the stairs, you could use plasterboard.

    Possible water ingress

In the past, someone has spilt water onto the carpet/floorboards. There could be a reasonable chance of, lets just say, an elderly owner in the past that may not have got to the toilet.

Creaky Floorboards: Can't find company to do it, may not want to do it myself?

Correct, just when you've screwed and nailed them all down, the squeak reappears because it's a joist problem.
