Thanks all. I replaced the washer and there is no longer a humming noise when the toilet is flushed.

Kitchen mixer tap – Cold water will not turn off

When I said 'tap head', I was referring to the taps spout ie where the water normally comes out of. The water that came out was normal mains pressure, not at a reduced flow.

Kitchen mixer tap – Cold water will not turn off

Ok but would it not be the case that if the hot cartridge was fitted on the cold side, it would just mean that when the cold tap lever was in the 'on' position, the tap would actually be 'off' and vice versa? I actually think I noticed that was the case when I swapped them over earlier on today...

Kitchen mixer tap – Cold water will not turn off

Ok, so I removed the O-ring/rubber washer altogether from the gland and I checked that the gland was in the closed position before refitting it into the cold water side of the tap. Removing the O-ring/rubber washer from the gland should mean that when it is screwed in, the gland sits slightly...

Kitchen mixer tap – Cold water will not turn off

Apologies but I am not familiar with some of the plumbing terminology. Is the cartridge that you refer to the same thing that I am calling the gland? ie the brass unit that screws into the tap itself that I have pictured below. Also, where is the 'valve seat' located? Is it the black...

Kitchen mixer tap – Cold water will not turn off

I can't see any obvious signs of damage within the tap but I am not 100% sure what type of damage I'm looking for. I don't know if you can tell if there's damage, from the photos below.

Kitchen mixer tap – Cold water will not turn off

It's the 1/4 turn brass type When I turn the head on the gland, I can see the insert inside the gland moving from the open to the closed position and vice versa. Also, when I blow into the gland when it's in the open position, the air comes through it. When I blow into it in the...

Kitchen mixer tap – Cold water will not turn off

Thanks for your quick reply. Where is the rubber seat that you refer to, located please? Also, after having described how I have tested the glands, am I correct that they do not appear to be defective? It's definitely the complete tap that needs replacing?

Kitchen mixer tap – Cold water will not turn off

My Kitchen mixer tap has been dripping for a while now, so I thought I would remove both brass screw-in glands to check the washers in each and give the glands a clean at the same time. I did this and both glands looked in reasonable condition. I also checked both while I had them removed, to...

Loud humming noise and vibration when toilet is flushed

Thanks for your quick response. Are all of these washers the same type and size? Also, I'd like to try and have a go at fixing this problem myself before having to call someone in. How do I access the washer? The image below looks very similar to the side entry flush valve that's in my...

Loud humming noise and vibration when toilet is flushed

When I flush my toilet, there is a loud humming noise from what I initially thought was coming from inside the cistern. I lifted the cistern lid off and when the toilet is re-filling with water, the noise is at its loudest when I touch (I think it’s called) the side entryfill valve. You can also...

Purlin will be in the way of proposed roof window position

Just my opinion but I think putting a raised platform or for want of a better phrase, a step below the window to raise the height in that location may look quite strange and would not be ideal. Nevertheless, But I suppose if an installation did need to comply with Building Regs ie then to...

Purlin will be in the way of proposed roof window position

Yes. The joists in my loft are a similar size to my 1st floor joists and none of the joists in the loft span any greater distances than my 1st floor joists. According to the earlier posts, the 1100mm maximum height dimension that Keylite refer to does not apply to either of my situations ie...

Purlin will be in the way of proposed roof window position

So it would appear that the 1100mm maximum height dimension that Keylite refer to does not apply to me, regardless of my two potential situations ie If I have the roof window(s) installed and I leave it as a loft space then the roof windows can be installed at whatever height above my purlins...

Purlin will be in the way of proposed roof window position

There are no windows in my loft at the moment but I am looking at having my roof covering replaced in the not too distant future so I wanted to get one or maybe two new roof windows installed during those works. My house has a ground floor, a 1st floor and the loft space above that. I may...

Purlin will be in the way of proposed roof window position

I would like to install a roof window (Velux or Keylite type). I have read in one of Keylite’s brochure’s that in order to comply with means of escape in the event of a fire, the maximum dimension from the top of the existing ceiling joists in what is currently my loft, to the lowest point on...

How do I adjust the fill level on my cistern?

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure that the fill valve was actually working correctly as I am not that familiar with how it operates. I have now removed the top section of the flush valve. The rubber seal looks in relatively good condition. See the photos below. I'll remove the rubber seal...
