Considering Nest in new build apartment

I see. Would I be able to identify if this is such a system before calling out a heating engineer? As I stated above, we're trying to work out if this is actually cost effective before purchasing the device and getting someone in to fit it - if it's plug and play (with little-to-no modifications...

Considering Nest in new build apartment

Thanks, that tallies with what I had in mind (regarding both your suggestions). My question regarding the repurposing would be how to handle the 240V-to-12V conversion? I don't think the existing wall plate has much room for transformers and such so I think I'm stuck.

Considering Nest in new build apartment

The existing thermostat just provides basic on/off functionality, so it's fairly dumb (if that's what you mean by the question?)

Considering Nest in new build apartment

We've recently moved in to a new build apartment which I understand has communal heating for the entire building, controlled by a Digistat +2 thermostat installed near the front door. Before we go ahead with the purchase I've been researching the necessary changes which will be required to...

    Noisy Potterton Prima F

Yes the noise immediately goes away when the thermostat is turned off, so I guess it's the fan. Is it worth getting a refurbished one? Any recommendations on where to purchase from with a view to just paying someone to fit it for me?

    Noisy Potterton Prima F

Our Prima F boiler's getting on to be about ten years old or so and makes one hell of a racket when what I presume is the motor kicks in. The noise can be heard throughout the house and it rattles the flue in the alley way terribly. Here's a video demonstrating the noise... Does anyone...

    Adjusting catching french doors

Yandownie, a picture of the hinges can be found here: http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=610226#610226 The guy did mention that any decent door would have flag hinges as they're fully adjustable. However he didn't mention them as a solution. In any case, would replacement or...

    Adjusting catching french doors

I've recently had a chap come round to take a look at my upvc french doors at the front of our house which seem to catch in hot weather and are ok when it's cold out. He took the door apart and came to the conclusion that the door hadn't dropped, but packed an extra (think it was 1mm) wedge...

Tiny paint bubbles all over newly painted wood

Thanks for the tip! Would it be ok to now give these bubbles a light sanding before my next coat so that i can improve the finish? I've read that you need to be rather gentle so as not to scratch the gloss too much - could you suggest any particular grade of sandpaper or should i be going for...

Tiny paint bubbles all over newly painted wood

The can may have been shaken up a bit in the car on the way home, but no i didn't intentionally shake it - just gave it a quick stir before slapping it on. This morning i've noticed that there's a higher concentration of bubbles on the areas where i filled in some damage to the wood with...

Tiny paint bubbles all over newly painted wood

I've just gone ahead and tried to re-paint some radiator covers. I've not primed the wood as they were previously painted in white already, so i simply sanded them down and dusted them off. The finish is somewhat spoiled by a number of tiny little bubbles all over the surface and i'd like to...

Almost boiling water out of bathroom taps

How can i check whether the valve body is stuck in that case? The stat is graduated from 40 up to 80 so i didn't realise there was a problem leaving it at 40! Even so, the water coming out of the taps feels more like 80 as i'm sure something's not working quite right.

Almost boiling water out of bathroom taps

We recently had a new cylinder thermostat fitted as the old one was broken and seemed to be permanently on (or off, whichever it is!). Having adjusted it to about 40 degrees the water coming out of the taps was perfect, however we sometimes turn it up when running a bath before turning it back...

    Taking apart an office chair

I've received some replacement parts from the supplier of an office chair i have at home and i need to fit them - i'd ask the supplier for instructions but their customer support is abysmal. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to take apart one of those fancy adjustable office chairs that...

Adjusting uPVC doors with these sort of hinges...

Missed the reply to this so sorry for the late reply! No i haven't taken out beading before, so not sure whether to leave it to the pros. The thing is the other door that has the same problem and the same style hinges has nothing more than an oval window of approximately 30cm by 50cm in...

Adjusting uPVC doors with these sort of hinges...

Could someone please suggest whether the hinges on this upvc door are adjustable, i've had a search through previous posts and they look different to the usual style that have adjustment holes for adjustment with an allen key. The door is drooping on hot days and is consequently catching at...

    Tap "wobbles" when done up

You were right - very easy! Thanks! :D However... now i've done both of them up (and they were very loose), the basin one seems to wobble when it's undone but is solid when it's done up. The bath one is fine. I get the impression that this might be a tad more difficult to resolve?

    Tap "wobbles" when done up

I've just installed a new pair of basin taps and a shower/bath mixer. For some reason when all the taps are done up so that the water is off, on both the cold basin and bath taps you can wriggle the top of the tap and it wobbles left and right. Both the hot taps are fine and remain very sturdy...
