    Big words

Why does society these days seem hell-bent on re-wording everything? I have heard a radio advert describe a "mechanic" as a "technician". High school "pupils" are now described as "students". My manager tells me to "engage with stakeholders" instead of "talking to that other department"...

    Chimney Draw, help!

May I ask what you are burning on the fire? Good quality coal or damp wood?

    DESPERATELY SEEKING HELP

 Do you? It seems quite high that! Are you talking about the damp contained in clouds by any chance?

Replacing Water With Anti Freeze Escort

Lee Thanks a lot for this advice mate, I will try that this morning. To compound matters the bl**dy temperature dial isn't responding so it looks like there is something wrong with the thermostat (this wasn't working before I changed the coolant). I'll let the engine cool down and get back...

Replacing Water With Anti Freeze Escort

Sorry if this is a hijack, however I have replaced the coolant/antifreeze in my escort today and suspect that there are some airlocks, Haynes reckon the system holds 7 litres, however it is showing full after about 5 1/2. I am not aware of the bleed screws mentioned previously, so what is the...

    finishing MDF

I've got a radiator cabinet made from MDF and would like to paint part of it the same colour as one of the walls. I will prime and undercoat the cabinet with oil based paints first, would I then be able to paint part of the final coat with the emulsion I used to paint the wall or not?

    Ripping off B&Q??

I hate DIY sheds too for a number of reasons, however today I hate furniture sheds even more especially DFS. At 12:10 my mobile rang while I was at my desk (lucky as it would have been off if I'd been next to a plane) and some wench announces her name and that they've got my settees ready...

    mild or bitter

"A pint of old scruttocks bowel buster please!" Bitters are fantastic, from the light summer hoppy ones right to those which suit this time of year like Bombardier and Hobgoblin, to the more quaffable best bitters like e.g. Black Sheep, all brilliant!!

    darts sport or game

I'm a keen darter, so an interesting post (note I said 'keen', not good!) Compare it to shooting or archery. You are hitting, or aiming at, a target from a fixed distance away from it. Is shooting or archery described as a game? It is played in olympic competitions so probably it gets the full...

    render and DPC

Well I'm not a plasterer, renderer or builder, however I understand the bellcast to consist of a bead which forms the render out away from the wall, allow rainwater to drip clear of the wall.

    render and DPC

Can you please clarify exactly what this means? The DPC firm will say whatever they want in order to get your money out of you. As long as the render doesn't bridge above and below the DPC and has a bellcast along the bottom of it then you should be OK. I'd put my money on the builder in...

    Damp Proof Injection

The first thing to do is establish whether the wall(s) is damp and then whether the cause of this is rising damp. It is very common to have 'damp' walls in houses that have been standing due to the lack of ventilation. If the damp doesn't go from simple ventilation and heating then...

    Damp Proof Injection

Why do you think you need a DPC? Do you know whether there is one already there or not, and if there is one, whether it has failed?

    Wet hardboard?

Many thanks for that Matty, I'll use ring shank nails.

    Acclimatisation question

Bit of a mouthful that title!! Amongst other things, I'm a bit confused regarding acclimatising solid oak 18mmx120mm. I have 4 days and nights for the wood to acclimatise before blind nailing it. Should I turn off the radiator in the room at first then turn it on after a couple of days...

    Wet hardboard?

What's the best way of fixing it down to 22mm old pine? 1" nails/pins? Should I apply any glue as well? Thanks gents
