Can you skim over emulsion which goes soft when wet?

when scraping some wallpaper from my hall walls, i discovered that when wet, the emulsion (assume it to be emulsion) underneath scraped off. I've continued to scrape off with the intention to repair myself but as you can imagine you get the odd gouge etc. Additonally in some places the...

    leaking eaves (again)!

had a closer look from the inside and have drawn a quick sketch of how it is constructed just in case it makes any difference. Because my roof is boarded then felted I can't actully see into the area boxed in pink on my drawing. The green line I've drawn is the eaves vent, looks to be...

    leaking eaves (again)!

aye, I mentioned in my original post that the felt looks to be damaged or not in the gutter so based on what I can see and what you describe that definitly seems to be the main problem. would it be overkill to replace the first strip of felt with higher quality stuff and install eaves trays...

    leaking eaves (again)!

as i understand it the purpose of an eaves tray is to stop the felt sagging? wondering if i would need an eaves tray as my felt is sitting on top of boarding?

Boiler in garage, how to tell if it's firing.

for no reason really other than nerdy curiosity, is there any way to tell remotely if my boiler is actually firing? the boiler is in the garage and obviously I can tell if the room or cylinder stat is calling for heat. I am planning on replacing my room stat with a digital one and have...

    leaking eaves (again)!

exactly as last January, my gutters have filled with ice, causing an ice dam on the roof and resulting in water seeping in, running down the inside of the exterior wall and dripping in through window/door frames. If i go in the eaves I can see some timbers are wet and the top of the...

Balancing CH and HW and condensing boiler questions

actually one further question, my pump is set on 3 (and was before i moved in) i don't have a problem with noise but wonder if it's better to try and make my system run on 2? the way the pipework is set up i have about 8-10m of 22mm downstairs before the rads start teeing off, each on 10mm...

Balancing CH and HW and condensing boiler questions

Hi, I replaced my HW cylinder earlier this year, now we are using the CH more, I've noticed that the radiators are much colder when the HW is on. (i've also replaced/added some rads too) Question 1: I assume I need to properly balance my HW as it's stealing too much flow? (I fitted a...

    PTFE on compression fittings?

he he, this is why the internet is great, 4 pages of debate on some technicality! :D Seems like the summary is: No - if you do the job properly first time. Yes - if it won't stop leaking due to age/initial poor fitting and you can't replace.

Do extractor fans see dead people?

PIR's work on infrared, they are not pointing towards windows or anything are they? I seem to remember reading that can cause false detections.

how to identify roll-top radiator manufacturer?

I've got roll-top radiators throughout my house, I want to find out the maker so I can find out the water content to calculate inhibitor and because I want to find out the BTU size to see if they are sized appropriatly for each room. My googling has found that Myson make roll-tops, just...
