    Supply to Programmer

When installing the supply to a programmer, I believe you need to provide a fused switch. If this is installed vertically above the programmer, is it reasonable to route the outgoing HW and CH cables through the back of the metal box? If not, how do the experts do it neatly? Many thanks

Uneven Platerering work on walls in hall and lounge

I am not a professional plasterer, just an enthusiastic amateur and I would agree that for a first class job you need a professional. But having said that, I have taught myself to plaster over the years and you can achieve reasonable results on small areas and of course you can do it at your...

    Refacing stone arch

We have some stone arches which were added by the previous owner. I feel they are so ugly they should be removed but my wife and kids think they add "character". The stone looks like gritstone and the surface is rough and has a number of gouges in the surface from previous abuse - bashed...

Sounds like water hammer. There are several useful threads about this on the forum already

New Toilet Fitted - Stain where the old one used to be

Bathrooms are intrinsically damp environments and when the humidity changes the smell can return. I believe a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and bicarbonate of soda is good for removing these sort of stains and should kill the smell as well. I used it on the cat variety which is every bit as...

    Garage door replacement

Thanks for that. My door has a galvanised steel frame which looks sound as the splits in the fibreglass are not where the frame is and there is no rust. The fibreglass itself is little more than a couple of mm thick and it is supported by a wooden subframe which is then screwed to the...

    Heating Programmer

The programmer is basically just a timed switch or switches, so as well as the LNE coming in, there will be switched live output - often separate wires for HW and CH, sometimes combined. This will go off to the boiler and room and or cylinder thermostats.

    Heating Programmer

I'm only an amateur but I'm pretty sure that those backplates are standard and lots of programmers are interchangable with the same 6 prongs. You ought to be able to get something from a shed for more like £30. The larger B & Q's have a good display of them.

    Garage door replacement

I have a double garage with a very tired looking fibreglass door. This is split in several places and looks awful and can't be very secure. A replacement door would appear to cost well over £1000 for a 14' size so I've been looking at alternatives. Since the supporting framework is...

Laying copper pipe in concrete floor

I need to move a radiator and perhaps extend the system down a long hall with one cold (unheated) end. The floor is concrete and the obvious answer is to channel the floor using an angle grinder or similar and lay the (15mm) pipes in that. I have been told that laying pipes in concrete is...

Levers and keys for Chubb locks

Being a bit of a cheapskate, I thought £25 a lock sounded a bit steep, since I only paid £10 a lock in the first place and have four to change. I did however find a very obliging locksmith on eBay based in East Anglia who very obligingly send me 4 sets keyed alike for £25.

Levers and keys for Chubb locks

I have several Chubb 3K74 5 lever locks which I would like to key alike. Does anyone know a source of levers and keys? It would seem that to order from Chubb you need to be in the trade.

    Banging noise

As a temporary expedient, you may be able to cure it by turning the mains stop cock down a little. Unfortunately, the noise will probably return when the mains water pressure changes. Long term answers are as corgiman suggests.

    Programmable Room Thermostats in °F

Does anybody know whether you can buy room thermostats which are accurate to 1°F. I thought about buying one from the US but they mostly seem to work on low voltage and of course a mains one would be rated for 110v, so maybe the insulation wouldn't be adequate. Anybody got any ideas? The...

Joinery advice needed for awkward angle Skirting Board

Alternatively, if you cut at 75 degrees (half the angle you want to create) to the outside face you should achieve the same result. I would also cut these angles and check the exterior angle where the two pieces meet before you cut the boards to length .
