    Underfloor ventilation conundrum

No, that diagram was the only example I could find detailing a level threshold. I found a few like that but they were all drawn for solid oversite slab. I'm beginning to think I'm blazing a trail here

Hoping to end up with something like this.

    Underfloor ventilation conundrum

Detached. Just a box sticking out of a gable end wall really. The objective was to open up to surrounding patio without change in level. Seen lots of glossy ads for this kind of home improvment but when I see detail for level thresholds, they draw them up against solid slab floors like this:

    Underfloor ventilation conundrum

Wow. That all seems like a lot of trouble to go to. I understand that ventilation is to prevent build up of gases like methane/radon and to control moisture levels. Can't these be dealt with by using appropriate membranes or something? Also, there's the possibility of breaking in below the...

    Underfloor ventilation conundrum

Architect never really surveyed the ground levels properly. Builders having to innovate on the fly.

Which heating system to use in this kind of extension?

I'm finding some vertical rads that give us the required output for well under 1K but I'm still concerned that the area around the glass will get cold pooling being furthest away from the rad. motorbiking - those above ground rads would solve this but they all look ugly to my eye. I'd worry...

    Underfloor ventilation conundrum

So underfloor ventilation is necessary for suspended floors - be they timber or concrete. Our extension happens to be concrete beam and block. Fine then, telescopic vents would be the usual solution to bring the vents up from below the beams up to the outside walls above DPC level...

Which heating system to use in this kind of extension?

The prices on those trench rads are a bit steep! A log burner was one of my first thoughts as we already have an open fire in the living room although that's only to make things cozy. Not sure I could be arsed to maintain a fire as the only source of heat although they do put out an impressive...

Which heating system to use in this kind of extension?

I was already convinced to forget electric by post#6. It's a toss-up between wet ufh and a 4kW vertical radiator in the center of the masonry wall. The rad gets around the problem with finding a place for the ufh pump. I will take a good look at those trench rads motorbiking pointed out though.

Which heating system to use in this kind of extension?

Interesting suggestion woody. I had't thought of using a vertical radiator. I always looked at those and thought they were style over substance as 'radiators' are partly convective. If I could be convinced that it would be as effective as a horizontal rad and not just send heat out the roof, I...

Which heating system to use in this kind of extension?

Hi Woody. I'm sure that's a very sound strategy. If it was electric in the main house it would be crazy to fit a boiler just for the extension! But I somehow feel it doesn't address the lingering questions I still have about switching to electric (!)

Which heating system to use in this kind of extension?

Hi flameport. Yes, I suppose that's really what I'm getting at. Is what we're constructing only a little bit better than a conservatory? It will certainly have fewer losses but that would need quantifying. I think the biggest difference will be in the roof. Regardless, the price differential...

Which heating system to use in this kind of extension?

We're building a single storey, 5m x 4m flat-roofed extension to our kitchen (rather than a typical bolt-on conservatory) as we want to be able to use it all year round. It has floor to ceiling glazing on three elevations to make the most of the central garden setting. The otherwise...

Cavity tray for extra wide wall

I suppose it might work if it reached in far enough, at least to half way across the cavity to catch drips off of ties above. But then it would also need to slope down to the outside to drain out of a set of weep holes. A lead flashing is going in underneath so I guess this could be done with...

Cavity tray for extra wide wall

Our house walls have a cavity formed by two leafs of lightweight block with an external facing of rough cut stone. A new extension with a flat roof is to be built out from such a wall. This requires a cavity tray to be inserted along the roof line but all the ready-made trays I see are designed...

    Potterton Promax E125

Is this really the case? You can't squeeze much atmospheric gas out of water. Anyway, I've turned up on many occasions when the boiler has tripped with E125 and found nothing but water at the all the radiator bleed valves. I'm not sure how the Baxi eng. has been finding air.

Hi MrTherm, thanks for your thoughts on this. It's not known for sure that this is what's happening, just my hunch. However, it may be that wider experience has found this to be an issue - is this the case?

    Potterton Promax E125

I agree Gas2Air, provided that their assurance that the relevant sensors, pump and diverter valve within the boiler are all functioning correctly then, in all probability, the error code reflects a problem somewhere else in the system. The developer however refuses to take responsibility beyond...

    Potterton Promax E125

Hi Andrew, Potterton have simply stated that their boiler is working to specification. Diagnosis of the cause of the conditions that give rise to the error appear to be beyond the scope of their investigations. I have a certain amount of sympathy with this attitude although the swapping out of...
