    Ceiling is low at the end of room. The ceiling joists have a notch cut, and resting on rsj. Can i raise this at room level height, and bolt directly on rafters. The rafters and joists are 2x4. What would be an ideal size for timber according to todays standards.

    Permitted development allows only 2.5 metre if going on the boundary and 4 metre if leaving a 1 metre gap around the building. Your best bet is flat roof to utilise maximum space.
