There is stuff you can do to improve your clay soil, it's just a case of trail and error, what has worked for me might not work for you ect. In my gardens I've had pretty good results (so far)

The wall was just plain before I 1st painted it, normally it just gets a quick once over with a wire brush and hose down before it gets repainted. When I've done this, I used 3mm hardboard, not ply wood. I just payed it on the floor, upto the the skirting and screwed it down, the gaffer taped all the joints, I went right upto the door, we also had a new door fitted so the extra 3mm on the floor didn't really matter

There is loads yo can do to make it feel smaller, plant some tall shrubs/trees across the garden, but not all the way, which would kind of make it feel smaller with a private part behind, for a sitting area, some one for the kids to play or park the car? Maybe paint your fence a different...

I'm no garden expert but I'd say it's not needed, but you might get better results if you do. Personally I do myself, spread a bag of compost around and fork it in, I even put some volcanic rock dust in this year, suppose to be good stuff, I'll find out soon.
