Would turning down the boiler (from 6 to lower) have any effect?

I've just looked at the boiler - an Ideal Mexico (V.Old) and the knob was turned up to 6/6 - I've turned it down to 4. Don't know whether this will make any difference?

Yep, think so - I'm guessing this is from the boiler?

The rumble has just started up after putting the heating on for about a couple of hours. I jumped up into the attic to find that the expansion tank has filled slightly with boiling hot water that has come up from the pipe from the boiler. Can you let me know if I should be worried?

Still unsure what to do about the murky brown water - could I clean the tank out with a sponge and then replace to current level with clean water??

The water level is currently quite low, well below the vent pipe. Unsure about the pump - it is not easily accesible as it's in the kitchen, behind the cupboards in an old chimney space. It could be the rearranged pipes. Will try to get a pic.

Thanks for quick reply Seco. The murky brown water is cold, and there doesn't appear to be much sludge at the bottom. It does look as if the level has been higher than the vent pipe as it has left a damp tide mark at about that level. If it is rising to the vent pipe what does this...

Checked the two tanks in the loft. One is a large round black one with a ball valve, with what looks like clean water - the top is a lipped plastic lid. The other is a smaller plastic rectangle tank with a ball valve. Just had a look and the wooden board cover had not been replaced...
