Have recently had a new Hot Water Cylinder fitted.

Seems to be working. However, when hot water and heating on there is an all mighty noise every now and then from that area. It sounds like a rumble of thunder!!!!!

Any ideas to what could be causing it.

Can you identify whether it is predominantly due to heating or hot water (ie turn one off and wait, then try the other)?

Hi.

The noise is real bad - sounds like a big gurgling noise and a roll of thunder coming from the attic down past the new HWC.

I turned off the Hot Water and it seemed to stop. So, it only happens when the heating is on.

The HWC was fitted about a month ago - the plumber had to redirect some of the pipes as the cylinder wouldn't fit in the space.

Any ideas of what it could be and whether a non-expert can fix??

Thanks

Checked the two tanks in the loft.

One is a large round black one with a ball valve, with what looks like clean water - the top is a lipped plastic lid.

The other is a smaller plastic rectangle tank with a ball valve. Just had a look and the wooden board cover had not been replaced properly, with half of it hitting the ball valve. It is soaking wet.

The other thing is - in this small tank should the water be a murky brown colour??

wood board covers are not a good idea as they useally end up like yours wet and they collapse and end up in the tank holding the float valve open.

murky brown colour is not a good sign and depending how murky brown.

is their any sludge etc in the bottom of the tank ?
is the water warm/hot in the tank.

sounds like it may of been pumping over out of the vent pipe.

check it when the systems been running or you hear the noises.

Thanks for quick reply Seco.

The murky brown water is cold, and there doesn't appear to be much sludge at the bottom.

It does look as if the level has been higher than the vent pipe as it has left a damp tide mark at about that level.

If it is rising to the vent pipe what does this mean?

Could the wooden cover stopped it working? If so, by replacing the cover will it sort itself out or does it need a plumber to check over?

Thanks

the vent pipe is not in the water is it ?

does sound like its been pumping over at sometime.
what speed is the pump on?

have you any pics of the airing cupboard pipework etc ?
maybe the pipework thats been altered is not correct.

The water level is currently quite low, well below the vent pipe.

Unsure about the pump - it is not easily accesible as it's in the kitchen, behind the cupboards in an old chimney space.

It could be the rearranged pipes.

Will try to get a pic.

Still unsure what to do about the murky brown water - could I clean the tank out with a sponge and then replace to current level with clean water??

you can clean the tank out but if the whole systems like it may be best to drain system and flush it through.

The rumble has just started up after putting the heating on for about a couple of hours.

I jumped up into the attic to find that the expansion tank has filled slightly with boiling hot water that has come up from the pipe from the boiler.

Can you let me know if I should be worried?
