    fitting downlights

Thanks guy's for the help. From what you have said, it seems like the electrician has done something. It did seem like he was really rushing and kept going on about how much pressure with work he has. He'd just used connection blocks which were exposed. The MCB and RCD was tripping...

    fitting downlights

Hi. I had some down lights fitted a few days ago and I have had a couple of issues with them. The RCD kept tripping every time the light was turned on and one of the spots flickered before turning off. I took it down to check and the connection block had melted. The way they have...

    Wireless heat and smoke alarm

The electrician did some work in the house and left the cables their ready for when I fitted the alarms. I haven't got the alarms yet, they are being delivered soon, so can't see the instructions. I've just checked and the cables hanging down are spurred off completely different lights, so...

    Wireless heat and smoke alarm

They are linked wirelessly, so if one goes off, it alerts the other one to go off. It still needs to be connected to the mains. I thought that you would need 3 core + earth if they weren't wireless, so one of the cores would send the signal to the other unit. I'm buying a set from an...

    Wireless heat and smoke alarm

Hi. I need to fit a Wireless heat and smoke alarm. The electrician has spurred off a light fitting in the kitchen and one in the hall, but I have just checked and it is twin and earth cable. Can the still be connected with twin and earth or does it have to be 3 core and earth. Thanks.

    Outdoor christmas lights

Hi. I have outdoor christmas lights that I am putting up around the fascia of my house, but I need to extend the cable from the plug to the first light. There's 8m between them at the moment, but I need another 2 metres. Can you buy and use the green flex that the lights are made from and...

    dropping chimney

Hi. I am going to be dropping the chimney below the roofline on my bungalow and would like to know the exact way to re-fit the flue. I've got a bit of an idea, but want to know the exact way. I know the chimney has to be dropped low enough for it to be inspected around the top, but what...

    Jointing slabs

Thanks both. I will definitely use that tool and the materials and mix you advise. I'm fed up of having to go over other people's (so called builders) work and just want to get it done right first time.

    Jointing slabs

Hi. About 3 years ago I had someone lay slabs for my drive. Its about 3m wide by 30m long. About 6 months ago I noticed that quite a few at the front had become loose. It was an area of around 20m2, so I decided to take them up and re-lay them. He had laid them on cement, but instead of...

Hi noseall. I was planning on using that, but wasn't sure of the exact way of laying it. What depth should it be and what do I need to use to compact it. Cheers.

    Tarmac repair

Hi. I have just removed and re-laid new curb stones and now need to repair the Tarmac. It is about 3m long by 150mm wide. I have concreted both sides of the curbs so the Tarmac will be laid onto flat concrete which is about 60mm below finished level. What is the best way for me to...

Hi. I would just like to know what the correct paint should be used for the kerb stones on my property. Would a standard masonry paint be sufficient? Thanks.

    Wet look Travertine

Hi. I had a Travertine floor tiles laid about 2 months ago and they went really dull after grouting. The tilers did clean them pretty well, but they still look really flat. Is there any type of seal that I can put on them that will give a wet look appearance. Thanks.

    Thermostat and TRVs

Hi namsag. The boiler is a Ravenheat 42kw A Rated Condensing Combi Boiler and there are TRVs on every rad in the property. I agree that in some cases new tradesmen are more keen to learn, so the sometimes know more than more experienced guy's, but the reason I'm checking is that a...

    Cornice/pelmet

Hi cajar. I noticed that as well. I assumed that the more teeth the better. I tried it with a 48 tooth one and it was worse. I had a look at the displays in a kitchen shop and they weren't much better. The guy said it's difficult to get a perfect finish on the high gloss kitchens.
