British Gas - New System - Are they really the devil?!

1CANHELP - No not at all ... To be honest I almost cancelled their appointment after a few local chaps quoted, but was very surprised by their quote. Plus almost nothing to pay until its installed. So if I am not happy I dont pay until its sorted! I am 50/50 between BG and a local chap, but...

British Gas - New System - Are they really the devil?!

Whats wrong with Glowworms? PS: I have had WB's before and never had a problem .. though they were good boilers? Plus they offer 5yr warranty. Yeah, done that ... one local chap quoted £4K more than BG! Other was about £700 less than BG .. Yeah, The sales chap when pushed said I could...

British Gas - New System - Are they really the devil?!

I asked for a WB but they quoted for their own brand 330+ which they did tell me is made by Gloworm. In fairness they suggested that boiler becuase it can have a rear mounted flue - I did check WB's and I cant see theirs can.

British Gas - New System - Are they really the devil?!

Considering BG after numerous quotes for a new system. Are they really the devil? I read a lot of tongue in cheek comments on this forum but are they really that bad? Is it that most pro's on here run their own businesses and like to bait the big giant! I had a Homecare...

Is this new heating quote OK?

From what I understand any WB approved installer can then get the free 5yr warranty on their boilers. Its only valid if the boiler is serviced annually.

Is this new heating quote OK?

Had some other quotes now: For the exact same spec now £7000 inc vat Somewhat different to the first quote of £11,300 in vat !!!!! Had another WB approved chap who took one look at my mains pressure and said 'dont put in a combi or unvented' ... he didnt even quote, told me to think...

Are large boilers inefficient if not working flat out?

Thanks D_Hailsham for those links. Interesting about too large a boiler cycling all the time. Thats answered my orginal thread question. Surprised I can get cavity and loft insulation for £200. I had another house cavity insulated and always swore I would never again - they made no...

Are large boilers inefficient if not working flat out?

Its a detatched 3 storey house, built on a hill. Looks two storeys from the front, but has a basement sort of area underneath at rear garden level. Typical 1970's wimpey box construction with zero insulation. UPV double glazing. I have a little in the loft, and have considered cavity...

Are large boilers inefficient if not working flat out?

Thanks doitall. My plumber can offer the WB 5yr warranty, so at least on a system boiler all the bits should be covered. The existing single pipe system takes ages to heat up, ripping up the floorboards anyway to replace with ply so thought whilst I am at to go for new twin pipe system...

Are large boilers inefficient if not working flat out?

No was looking at these http://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/homeowner/products/gas-boilers/greenstar-40cdi-regular But you have got me thinking ... Does a system boiler have the pump and expansion vessel for the heating integral? So one of these Greenstar 30CDi System boilers would be...

Are large boilers inefficient if not working flat out?

Are large Kw boilers inefficient if not working flat out? The reason I ask is that a plumber said I should avoid getting an over powerful boiler becuase it would be inefficient - Is this true? I currently have a Potterton Kingfisher RS80 rated up to 23Kw and it really struggles in the...

Combi or Unvented or Vented HW system?

If a combi and an unvented cylinder has a 22mm mains supply to it wouldn't they both run out of 'puff' at the same time?

How deep is mains stop cock?

Yes, have checked Thames Water will. Want to check its cranked right open a street to check flow/pressure for unvented cylinder or combi. TicklyT - Like the spoon idea ... been taking out clumps of mud with my hands, but cant go any deeper.

How deep is mains stop cock?

75cm .... uuhhm, my arms not that long! Will the water board come out and clear it to make stop cock visible? Or could I say ask for a meter - let them fir a nice new plastic stop cock and then change my mind within the first year to revert to un-metered? (I'm in Thames Water)

How deep is mains stop cock?

I'm trying to get to my mains stop cock through the small cast iron flap in the street. I've spent 30 minutes with hand down there clearing out the mud. I'm now at arms length on my side and fumbled around with a screwdriver and still cant find it . Right next to it is a new style...

Combi or Unvented or Vented HW system?

Thanks ianniann - very detailed reply. I am having the boiler and whole heating system replaces (pipes + rads, replacing old single pipe system). I had decided on a combi - had one before in a 3 bed house - I had one plumber measure the flow and pressure who said it was OK, but yesterday a...
