    Lintel above window

Duh, it's not just the total swl, but with Cougars it's how it's put to the lintel. And, amazingly, lintels can actually take point loads too; where are you glibly trotting out such statements from?

    Lintel above window

Watch Cougar-type lintels as there are max ratios of loading between leaves. Often falls foul of this at eaves level, due to roof load on inner leaf and nothing on outside other than few course of brick.

    Which Type of Roof Truss

At 17½° it won't be very cathedral-like.... A ridge beam will allow you to have a sloping ceiling though. This won't be trusses, just loose timbers, order of 50x150s at 400 centres, miss out where you want a velux trim either side with doubles. Ridge beam size dependent on span: can be...

Suggested design loads for loft conversion

    Lol, the wanderer returns...possibly.

    Lintel Type

Kin hell, provide an SE with a set of sketches of plans, floor spans, with some dimensions and some photos inside and out and it will cost you about £80-100 plus VAT. Hardly at the level of personal bankruptcy is it?

Suggested design loads for loft conversion

You have absolutely no chance in providing a calculation to do what you are proposing. Don't even waste your time. And get someone who is a qualified SE to do the design. You know it makes sense.

Bet the engineers did not intend this!

Sudden Crack in external 7 internal wall

Ground floor *has* cracked before, repairs are visible to left hand side and below left hand window. The movement is to the left hand side of the door. Needs a borehole to find out why. May possibly be a leaking water supply pipe, but there are many other possibilities too, although gas repairs...

'Joining' a new external wall to an existing leaning wall

Don't go for a thick render to try and hide the distortion. 30mm+ ain't ever going to work. Either accept the distortion, build the new plumb and step at junction, or either step new wall slightly either forward or back and don't compete with the existing wall.

    That 9/11 programme last night

The ability of columns to sustain a loading depends on their lateral restraint. The application of a gradually increasing load will eventually result in the column bowing (try it with a ruler on end). As it bows, the tensile and compressive forces increase and, eventually, the column fails...

    connecting universal beams

Yes, he's had his head stuck in his books and has got uber-complicated. No one (in their right mind) will be doing continuous beam analysis for internal retrofit domestic situation beams. Unless they've fekked something up and it's already installed and they need to massage the...

    Soil retaining wall

Bank surface sloping = greater pressure on wall. Wall stands while soil effectively self-supports; wall ever called on to do what it is supposed to do, wall fails. Same applies to those you built. Back of wall might be damp, front exposed to sunlight, so differential expansion/contraction...

    LINTEL BEARING

It's fine. The steel flange of the lintel is somewhat stronger than the brickwork it's sat on.

    Soil retaining wall

Ok so you have some sort of footing and some rebar. But the amount the rebar sticks up is inadequate. Should be 450 ie two blocks. How much of it is in the footing? How big is this apparent footing?
