    Erbauer 1/2" router.

Hey. A freind has asked me to fit her kitchen including new chipboard worktops, mason mitred in on 3 sides. Can't really justify spending more than £60 on a router to do the job at the mo and yet just can't resist that 'must-buy-new-tool' itch, so don't want to hire. I've been using a...

    Which budget circular saw?

Hey. I've been using my JCB circ saw, fairly regularly, for 3 years on various DIY jobs. Never had any probs with it. Laser line was never really much use (use the paralel guide or a clamped straight edge) but other than that - really good.

    First drill!

I've got a Worx cordless drill (£50ish from Argos). Despite some negative reviews of it on here, it's held up fine to quite a few hefty diy jobs. Quite surprised by the amount of grunt it has when I used it for screwing in coach screws. Comes with 2 batteries and has 2 gears (one for...

    The Future

Sounds a lot like Communism. I reckon everything will work out alright. People will learn to adapt - they have to or they'll die. Once the oil runs out, governments/companies will begin to think about thinking about renewable energy sources seriously ... maybe. At the moment, 'we have oil...

    alcohol tax

I was listening to that story on the radio today. One of the main issues was with 13 or so kids a day are being admitted to hospital with drink-related illness (alco-poisoning, falling down drunk...) 'Must put up price of booze to stop kids buying it....' Isn't it already illegal to sell...

Toolshare scheme added to the freeconomy community

Deluks touched on a good point. Instead of having a 'tool share', how about a 'skill share'? If you own the tools, fair chance you know how to use it as well as how to carry out tasks associated with it. Not visited the site in question, but perhaps have a list of people with their tools and...

    Aerodynamics

I remember something similar at an RAF aptitude test I went to. Test sheet went something like: 1. Write name in top left corner. 2. draw a box around your name 3. Shade in odd letters 4. draw a circle around the box (on like this for 20 odd questions...) 25. having read these...

    How long can you survive?

23 seconds! :D Zip to the left then top left. Dodge the first block that comes to top left then sit in top left for 9 seconds or so. After that, it's a bit of a free for all! Nice one!

    HDTV

Yup. Can also mean 'Back in my day...' Been using that phrase for years. 'Back in the day, Pluto was a planet'. I replaced our old "38 (I think) CRT tv with a similar sized LCD, HD ready one. The drop in picture quality from non-HD Sky was huge! Picture seemed slower and more...

    Cows

SOCIALISM: You have 2 cows; you give one to your neighbour. COMMUNISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and gives you some milk. FASCISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and sells you some milk. NAZISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and shoots you. BUREAUCRACY: You...

    Order of Works?? Eek!

Hey. Not a professional, but to me that order sounds about right. It may be worth squeezing in a visit from building control (or whatever the Scottish equivalent is) as well as a reputable builder/structural engineer to take a look at your plans re: moving walls/creating doorways. Stud...

Stanley knife fat max piece of rubbish

Aye, the big blade locks out when in use. Really solidly as well. Also features a safety lock that prevents the other blade from coming out when the first one is out ... if that makes sense? It's meant as more of an outdoorsy/camping sort of tool. I find the serrated blade is great for...

Are DIY stud detectors any good?

I've got a B&D one that I use mainly for metal detection in walls I'm about to molest. Works fine for that but the stud finder function is a bit hit-and-miss. May find the stud... vaguely ... but can miss it on the next pass entirely!

    Which tool next?

Finishing nailer? Compound mitre/chop saw? One of those CD's that play 'tool noises' on. Have that blaring and you can watch the telly in your workshop in peace! Telly? CD player? mini-fridge?

    carpet underlay

I recently bought and fitted some Cloud9 Currus 9mm underlay. I can safely say it's sodding fantastic! Firm enough so you don't feel like your walking on marshmallow yet soft enough to be nice to walk on. Made a huge difference to warmth of bedrooms. £40 per 15sq/m roll off ebay.

    Prospective employee cold contacting.

Hey Richard. I'm fairly sure I could have found a better supplier for the stair parts (great website link, btw!). I opted to make the handrails myself in a bid to improve my woodworking/machining skills as well as reducing costs for my brother. As I had no strict deadline for the job, I took...

    Trickin' 'n' Treatin'

After last year's events (dog crap through letterbox, eggs on car and abuse shouted through windows from local teens that my Mrs teaches whilst at our old house), I've been busy adding bolts to both our high front gate and large parcel-sized letter box on fence. Not had a Halloween in our new...

    Handrail & spindle replacement.

How do. In a bid to improve my wood-working skills, I'm putting myself about abit like some sawdust coated slapper. Started a job for my brother, replacing his old handrail and spindles on his stairs. Going to take a couple of weeks as I will be doing the work at weekends, making the parts...

    Prospective employee cold contacting.

Hey eveyone. Thanks again for all the really useful advice! I've spent some of the last few days ringing local chippies (wood, not fish) as well as having a chat to one of the large, local builders firms. Only thing going was an apprentiship at one of the smaller joiners. Had to leave it...
