    soldering pliers for sale anywhere?

Plastic sounds convenient, but I do wonder whether it'll cope with the heat OK.

    soldering pliers for sale anywhere?

I have made do with an oldie fashioned blow lamp for now. Two lessons learned to date: the flames spread a *long* way and I need another mat or two; the smoke alarm a couple of feet away but conveniently out of sight around the corner (a) works and (b) is very loud! The main reason I was...

    what is this brown goop?

Excellent idea, and it's reassuring to see that the original poster on that other thread had virtually the same problem as me, so I'm not alone! I'll look for a Magnaclean and some flushing agents. Thanks guys.

    what is this brown goop?

Aha, you're suggesting that the brown sludge in there is finely ground rust? Makes sense I guess, that it would be carried around if it was fine enough and then settle out in the header tank. The radiators aren't leaking or showing any external signs of corrosion (yet?), but there was a heck of...

    what is this brown goop?

I think you're right. I'm tempted to put some flushing agent in and let that slosh round for a week or so, maybe repeat a couple of times. Assuming that my system really is in a bad way (as it seems to be) with sediment, black corrosion etc, is there any point trying that? I'd like to avoid...

    soldering pliers for sale anywhere?

That's great, much closer to the sort of price I was expecting. From the comments I gather they're not very effective in practice?

    what is this brown goop?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try using a flushing agent and see if that clears things up. I guess if that fails the next step would be to get somebody to power flush the system for me?

    what is this brown goop?

My CH system seems to be full of mud! Some background: it's a conventional system with a header tank in the loft, gas boiler / pump and a diverter valve to feed hot water to the hot water tank and radiators. I noticed that when the boiler came on I had hot water dribbling into the header...

An idea, perhaps not a good one.

Some boilers are designed to heat the water on demand and don't have a hot water tank at all, I imagine these would normally be fed from the cold water tank in the loft. I'm sure there are similar systems that are fed direct from the mains, which would match the setup you're describing. More...

    soldering pliers for sale anywhere?

I'm looking for a plumbing tool, but having trouble finding it. Can you help? It's something I've seen many years ago but I haven't seen them for sale recently. I'm not sure what the proper name is for this tool, essentially it is a pair of pliers with tips shaped to fit round a copper...

    hot header tank, any ideas?

An update on the problem: I think the fill pipe is blocked, or very nearly blocked. I've tried blowing down it hoping to get bubbles back up the vent pipe, and absolutely nothing happens. I guess I will need to cut out and replace the fill pipe and hope that whatever is blocking it hasn't got...

    hot header tank, any ideas?

It's hard to say exactly when the water flow via the vent starts and stops compared to the pump going on and off. From what I've been able to see so far, water has dribbled out of the vent in circumstances where I'd expect the pump to have been running continuously for at least a few minutes...

    hot header tank, any ideas?

My CH system is the unpressurised sort with a header tank in the roof. It all seems to work, but I've noticed that when the boiler is running there is an intermittent dribble of hot water going into the header tank from the vent pipe, and the header tank gradually gets hotter and hotter. I've...
