Replacing wood under slates of Victorian house.

Thanks msmsm, yep I am going to get new slates and membrane installed, was just wondering about the wood. It seems to be more cost effective to use OSB as the whole roof (except rafters) is being replaced.

Replacing wood under slates of Victorian house.

While doing some work on a 150 years old Victorian terraced house, we noticed some issues with the roof leaking in many different areas. Some of the wood below the slates is very damaged, could you please let me know what kind of wood I should be using as a replacement? And where is the best...

    Upgrading from ring to radial?

Thanks for the reply, I moved into the property in March so still learning about it. It is 150 years old, the newer CU is mainly for the storage heaters which were installed at a later stage before I moved in. To be honest my electrical installation is awful, I am stuck with a Comfort Plus...

    Upgrading from ring to radial?

I am currently in the process of completely renovating my kitchen, I now have bare walls with sockets lying on the floor connected through a ring circuit. I have the opportunity to upgrade the electrics in that part of the house though I am unsure if this is totally necessary. I might have...

    Glasgow - Slater required

Hi all, Due to Covid-19, I found myself having to source tradesmen separately to replace my roof made of slates. Basically my roofer suddenly became uncontactable as he could not get hold of slates. After investigating myself, I was able to source slates quite easily. I also have a tradesman...

    Wiring intermediate switch

Sorry sorry SUNRAY, kudos should also go to you, you were the one who spot the issue first, I was not awaken properly this morning!

    Wiring intermediate switch

Andy & EFL, you were spot on, had to swap the red wires around from the single 2 way switch, now the red and black from the same sheath are connected to 1 and 2 of the switch.

    Wiring intermediate switch

Ok, basically the red and black coming from the same sheath plug into pin 1 and 2 of the 2-way switch, then the remaining "standalone" wire connects into the Common pin, is that right?

    Wiring intermediate switch

I will give it a go, thanks. If that does not work I will troubleshoot using my multimeter, I should be able to get to the bottom of it. PS: what is the most efficient way on troubleshooting intermediate switches installations using such a tool?

    Wiring intermediate switch

Although I made sure to wire the 3 switches (2 x 2 ways and 1 intermediate switch) the same way as they were before, it looks like I made a mistake. The light only lits in the following 2 scenarios: Do you think that inverting the Live and Neutral on 2 way switch 1 (ie the first of my 2 way...

    Wiring intermediate switch

I agree, it seems that other suppliers are doing it, I got 1 way switches using the same moulding as 2 way mouldings, just with terminals missing.

    Wiring intermediate switch

I have 2 lights in my hallway controlled by 3 switches, which all need replaced. I purchased 2 x 2-way switches and 1 intermediate switch from Toolstation. I have an issue identifying which cables should go to and the old and new switches are not labelled the same. 1) The current intermediate...

    EICR and spurs

I agree with both above statements, hence the reason I am starting getting quotes for both RCD + EICR. I would just like to communicate one thing; I lived in this flat for 15 years, I am moving out and not able to sell due to personal reasons caused by COVID, hence becoming a landlord for the...

    EICR and spurs

I went for an inspection and there is actually an earth cable going all the way from the back of socket to the light, my bad, sorry about that. The only issue is that there is no FCU, I will let the electrician decide if I need to add one. I have another bigger issue though, I do not have any...

    EICR and spurs

Would it best if I just leave the lamp connected as such and let the electrician do the test? (bear in mind there is no earth cable, doomed to fail I guess, though there is no earth connection on the lamp which seems pointless...) If it fails, would the electrician be willing to fix it on the...

    EICR and spurs

Thanks for the reply! Regarding point 2, the wall light cable is actually inside the wall and then pops out just at the back of the wall socket (i.e. behind the plasterboard). Since it is an unearth cable with no FCU, I guess I will have to install a new cable running along the wall, through a...

    EICR and spurs

Hi all, I have 2 questions: 1) Could a spur socket cause a C2 on a EICR? (i.e. not part of the ring) 2) One of the wall lights is connected to the back of a socket (i.e. spurring from the wall socket, if I can say that...), could this also cause a C2? (note there is no earth between the light...
