    pictures of old switch, new switch and wires. red yellow blue upstairs 2 way. may or may not be fed from downstairs switch. look at upstairs switch to confirm.

    the clipped wire is probably linking the lives. feed in to 1 common then linked across to feed other circuits. was there another one that has fallen out?

    look at the wiring diagrams at the start of this forum. then turn the power off at the main switch in your consumer unit. then get your multimeter out and find where the switch wires go. p.s. 4 hours? are you sure the guy was an electrician? an hour at the most.

    i would guess that the cable with the cut back core is a permanent live borrowed from another circuit and goes to L and the other cable is switched/timed live from the light. isolate the circuit at the fuse board and use a multimeter to find the switched live. connect across L&N at fan and...

    more info needed. what are the walls made of can you access under the floor. have you no access to the room above. with a little repair work you should be able to fish across the ceiling. as for wiring look at the sticky post at the start of the forum.
