Which sealed unit have I got ?

If they are that old I would say they are either 6.4mm laminated or just plain old 6mm. You should be able to get the overall thickness by measuring the thickness of the door then putting a straight edge across the face of the door near a corner and measure the distance between glass and...

    Central heating loop, 1 or 2 ?

Hi, haven't posted here in ages. The shell of my new extension is almost built so I am currently thinking of plumbing, electrics etc etc. My existing boiler is in part of the new extension (utility room), and the loop (don't know if this is the correct term), enters the house at this point...

    Window Frame 'Knock-Ons'

It is a lot easier to get the width right, but the height can be a bit trickier, with cement beds at the bottom or hidden lintels at the top.

    24mm vs 28mm Sealed Units

You wouldn't notice any difference between the 2.

    fitting wooden beads

I would put a bead of clear silicon around the frame, bed the glass in it, put another bead of silicon around the glass, then fit the wooden beads with panel pins.

    Window Frame 'Knock-Ons'

It doesn't have any impact on performance. Could be that you have a thick plasterline so the build up would be required. Or could be an unsure surveyor. A lot of people use the knock ons as a safety net, in case they cock the measuring up !

odd PVCu questions to prepare me for quote hunt

Hi, Keeping your window boards shouldn't be a problem, don't know about your architraves though without seeing the job. The reason for the large gaps that you see is basically down to poor measuring. There is nothing wrong with fitting with a cill or without on a stone cill. Personally I...

    CRACKS AFTER POLYFILLING

Its because it shrinks when it dries out. Might need a couple of coats, but leave it proud, so you can sand it down when it has dried properly.

    fitting windows

I think its about £75 per house regardless of how many frames. Check on the Fensa website for guides, loads of info. I fit for a fensa registered company, but if I get any private, weekend work I am not fensa registered. I just tell the customer this beforehand. It is always the...

Which Skin to fit door to?

The door should be fitted to the outer skin. Then you can either make good inside by using pvc trims or plasterboard and skim. In my opinion a plaster finish is much better looking. You might want to squirt some expanding foam in the cavity first though to stop any draughts.

    PVC Skirting

Pesonally I'd go with wood every time. PVC skirting would mark very easily. Use a tough varnish on your wood skirting and it wouldn't need re-doing for years and years. If you are going for a paint finish then mdf is as good.

    New Kitchen on way !!

Just ordered my new kitchen yesterday, and will arrive in around 6 weeks. Got a fair bit to do before it arrives like brick up underneath a window, electrics, plumbing and generally prep the area. Currently trying to work out what to do with the ceiling to hide extractor ducting, lintel...
