    Plastic or copper?

I'm sure it's been asked before but I can't find it. Just about to order a Potterton combi boiler and install heating system in my little 3 bed house that I've bought as a BTL. So what's the consensus of opinion on the piping? Plastic or copper and if plastic which system? Thanks

    Stripping wallpaper issue

Had exactly the same problem last week in our bedroom. The paper on the outside walls stripped fine and left the old paint behind but the internal stud walls hadn't been plastered so stripping the wallpaper brought most of the paint off but at the plasterboard joins where the pb had had a skim...

    Can I spray emulsion?

Just bought a small house for rental and the whole place needs decorating. All ceilings and walls need painting so hence the question. Can I use say one of the pump up spray systems that you use on garden fence paint? Would it work with say Dulux brilliant white, so do all the ceilings first...

    Painting a shed

Oooh you'll go to hell Cumbriaman, straight to hell. No passing Go and collecting £200, go straight to hell

    Painting a shed

Thanks for the feedback and yes I've done that and their Technical helpline are awful. Girlie I spoke to first of all said it's my fault for not putting the second coat on straight away. I told her I tried to do that but it wouldn't take. "Ah" she says, "you've got to leave it to...

    Painting a shed

Rebuilt my shed three years ago and painted it using Cuprinol Total Woodcare Spruce Green colour and really happy with it. Just built a big garage extension to the shed using planed shiplap and now time to paint it. Had half a tin of the old paint left so used that and then went to B&Q for...

    Which protection/coating for Cedar cladding?

Just been through exactly the same process with my fence. Built a 6 metre long x 2.4 metre high fence and up and over garage door out of Western Red cedar and after just two weeks it was starting to go grey. Tried all sorts of products to get the colour I wanted, i.e. the same as the original...

Decking - on concrete base, or directly over the grass?

+1 exactly right IMHO. Only thing I'd add, though maybe a bit unneccesary, is to give the posts a good couple of coats of bitumen type paint before concreting them in. Personally I'm not a fan of just hammering posts into the ground, I'd much rather take the time and trouble to dig holes and...

    Over 6' high fences

Just done exactly this. Concrete posts stick up 6 ft above finished ground level. One foot concrete gravel board along the bottom (obviously) then slot the six foot high panels in on top of the gravel board. Result one fence seven feet high. OK at each post there's a gap where the...

cutting concrete paving flags with angle grinder

But you don't need to cut all the way through the slab. Just score a line on all four faces with the angle grinder then a couple of sharp taps using a 3 inch wide bolster and it'll snap nice and cleanly along the line. And you don't need a big grinder. The cheapest 4 inch one you can find...

    Decking handrail

Eggs zackery. Forgot to say that the brackets are put on as our alien friend says, upside down.

Building a retaining wall near neighbours garage

I don't quite see what they're complaining about. If I understand this correctly, at the moment you have a retaining wall three feet from their garage and are planning to build a new retaining wall just an inch or so from their garage and fill in between your two walls with soil to enlarge your...

    Decking handrail

Or the easy way? Small steel angle bracket UNDER the hand rail screwed to the newel post and to the rail. if you want to get really flash, go for stainless steel brackets and screws. This is how I did mine, worked perfectly.

    Earth retaining rendered walls/flower beds

So why not delay till say late Aug/Sept or the autmumn when the plants are past their best? My own addition to this and what we did in my brother's terraced garden was to add a 2 inch sheet of polystyrene insulation board against the wall between the dpm and the soil. It's fairly "waterproof"...

Hiding Boiler in Kitchen Wall Cabinet

Yes dead right I did exactly the same, just ordered a door and used a false edge to the cabinets each side and hinged the door to that. Leave the top and bottom open to ensure an air flow for ventilation. All approved by Corgi Gas Safe cowboy boiler fitter.

    Paslode spark plug

How old is the fuel cell? Paslode nailers are very sensitive about out of date gas, have a look at the bottom of the fuel cell and if it's out of date fit a new one and it'll work. Failing that, i.e. if the fuel cell's still in date, have a read of the manual here...

    Brass screws needed?

Personally I'd replace with stainless but that's mainly because you can only get brass scews slotted and I detest with a vengeance, slotted screws. But that's just me.

Finishing a cedar fence and garage door

Built a fence and garage door from western red cedar and jolly good it looks too, really pleased with it. Just got to "paint" it and it'll be finished. Been trying all sorts of stuff, Sikkens, Ronseal, fence paint, yot varnish, Sadolin etc and finally settled on a Sadolin clear. Ideally looking...

    Brad nail gun query

Dean you're right in one respect but not in another. Taking Paslode as probably "the best" manufacturer of professional nail guns, they do two types of gun. One takes brads and is used for finishing work, architrave, skirting etc and the proper nail gun used for framing and carpentry work. It's...
