What have you been doing today?

Fitting a letter plate. Thought it would be a twenty-minute jobby. Still not flush or unimpeded, and the bolts need trimming down. And I also have a couple of spots needing more stain. Sometimes, these small jobs are a total PITA.

    Plastic Recycling

They've only just started collecting* it in the last few months here in Mid Wales. I think it was done for safety reasons. Lots of people still use bottle banks for glass though. *Once every three weeks. I never remember to put it out. Anyone passing much think I'm a total alkie as the bin is...

What have you been doing today?

My sympathies to her. Hope she feels better soon. I have vertigo attacks (BPPV), and that disorientated feeling is awful. (Most days it's barely there - very low level. I notice that it's harder to keep a straight line on the bike & I can't sleep flat without getting dizzy. A slight halo when I...

Hall tiling opens a can of worms?

I saw a video about them, but couldn't figure out how it would work. I'm hoping the dpc does its job. I'm looking at directing water away from another door by fitting a paver at a slant, and something above the door (it opens outwards and water coming off the porch roof could seep in), but...

What have you been doing today?

*sticks hands over ears* la la la, can't hear you say how dreadful it is. I think the 1500 was a Triumph engine, so Mark 4. (I could just Google it, but it's interesting to recall what I learnt from salivating over Practical Classics 20 years ago.) They switched, like other UK car companies...

What have you been doing today?

Is that one of the later models (Mark 3 or 4?) with the **** black bumpers for the US market instead of the chrome? I always wanted a Midget when I was younger. Test drove one in Bristol and it was so much fun. I went to work abroad though, and moved to London shortly after my return. And now, I...

Hall tiling opens a can of worms?

Wow, in one day? That's ambitious. First job will be getting the old sill out, offering up the new one, cutting it to fit and treating. It does depend on what you treat the sill with - it should have three coats on the underside and ends. I used Sadolin which takes 24 hours per coat. I had other...

Hall tiling opens a can of worms?

Yep. The old sill was so rotten, it came out with a few tugs. The frame where it met the sill had been drilled into and was rotten also. I used an Erbauer multi-tool with a plunge blade* to take out ~10cm pieces - see here both the fascia and inner door frame have been cut. The middle section...

    Removing waterproof paint from fence

Find another wax-based paint and paint over it with that. If the paint is a couple of years' old and weathered, it shouldn't even need sanding. Cuprinol Ducksback or Garden Shades should take over it - I did the same for a veranda. They are opaque paints so should cover the existing colour in a...

    Removing fence moss

Soda crystals (the green packet) dissolved in water in a spray bottle, and brush. Leave to soak. Rinse and leave to dry before painting.

    Filler on external front door

Some form of exterior caulk, maybe? The stain has taken really well over it.

Hall tiling opens a can of worms?

You can replace just the sill and put down a new dpc layer underneath it. I did so myself at the start of lockdown after I started sanding the sill and it came away in my hands. I had to replace a few inches of door frame either side too, which meant I could get a near-perfect fit. Totally...

Trump seeks to bump up his support

A stan is 'an overzealous or obsessive fan'. It comes from that Eminem tune from the '90s where one of his fans called Stan writes to him: K-pop is manufactured Korean pop music, which has become increasingly popular worldwide in the last couple of years. Usually, the stans just use...

Recessed Shelves in Showers : Waterproofing The Joins?

You can get premade recessed shelves that you set in the wall - that could be an option.

Oxford vaccine developer says UK could start vaccinating by September 2020

At the start of the outbreak, we were told it would be a minimum of eighteen months before a vaccine was available due to the protocols they follow to make them both safe AND effective. Safe. Effective. Pretty important for a vaccine, huh? So, it sounds like we're gonna be guinea pigs then...

Trump seeks to bump up his support

The numbers that didn't show weren't such a disaster. This is the real disaster for them: https://www.twitter.com/aetherlev/status/1274726592481091587 All those K-pop stans (and others) have polluted their revenue source.

    Timber profile

Yeah, it immediately reminded me of decking timber, though the planks I've experience of have grooves on both sides. If you can't find the proper stuff, you may be lucky and be able to get some with grooves only on one side though?

Walk facing on coming traffic means walk on right?

I thought that was only considered good practice for walkers when there's no pavement? Common sense is needed though. One evening, I was cycling up a hill in Richmond Park, probably doing under 10mph, when the local running group decided they would do their group sprint down that hill, into...

Best material to fill screw holes in skirting?

Wood. Hammer a sliver of wood into the hole until it splinters, sand any bits level, then even off with Everbuild wood filler. It's not as hard to sand as the Ronseal. Something like a matchstick should work if you don't have anything else to hand.

Curtain rail wall anchors keep breaking

I'm understanding that there's nothing more solid behind the drywall? Hollow wall anchors (Screwfix 12229) is what I researched and found as I have a similar situation. They need an additional setting tool, but they're working so far in my chipboard-lined house.
