    Do I have ceiling joists?

your secret's safe with me thinking of the dynamic loads even the most svelte of pole dancers can put on a pole (allegedly!) you will need to get a fixing direct to the concrete slab, and therefore cut out a section of plasterboard ceiling. Fixing through the plasterboard and the void...

How to install a C24 timber post?

my extension is all C24. piece of cake to source it. Ask the Engineer - if he specified a C24 post, he should specify fixing details. your Engineer's Professional Indemnity Insurance will not cover your house falling on your head if it is fixed to details found on an internet forum. It...

    Do I have ceiling joists?

drill a hole and have a look to be sure - easy to fill and re-paint. probably beam and block, or concrete in-situ, or Bison pre-cast slabs. probably strapped with timbers. out of interest. A pole? for dancing?

    Advice on extension

even if you plan to avoid spending money on an architect or architectural technician, see if you can find one that will at least 'run an eye' over your proposals. doing it yourself may save you their fee, but you can easily spend that on mistakes and 'i wish i'd known that at the time'...

    Coving Installation - surface preparation

New extension - new room - new plasterboard all taped, filled sanded etc. Ideally, i should install the coving now, and THEN start the decorating process. Someone who shall remain nameless, it transpires, has applied a mist coat to the room today. Does this affect the process of...

thanks. what is confusing me is that all the spur points are identified (washing machine, extractor hood, dishwasher, hob & tumblydryer) and this is a mystery extra one to nowhere, and a pencil mark to say 'double socket' and it is where i asked for it. .....i'll wait! sparky had...

    New Shed Room Leaking?

the answer is simple if you are not in the trade, and your knowledge of detailing is from neighbours / the internet etc, do NOT have this type of thing designed by a builder speak to an Architect he will keep you straight on Planning, Building Control, detailing, membranes etc. "no...

new mixer tap - fitting problem

i had discounted this for a couple of reasons i wont bore you with, but think i will re-investigate. Now that it is all in, it is more solid than anticipated, so can probably take a good bit more hacking for a larger hole. hey ho thanks

new mixer tap - fitting problem

evenin' all, i am plumbing in a new tap into a new kitchen. The tap is a FRANKE Olympus tap. The problem is that the threaded rod that connects the tap to the underside of the sink / worktop is too short. The sink is 25mm thick (ceramic) planted on top of a 40mm timber worktop, so...

Fitting a kitchen - the corner is not square

its all done now. The joiner was a master, and with a little careful shenanigans behind the units in all runs, and by buying slightly deeper work-tops (720mm) you cannot tell it's off-sqaure, even if one wall is out 85mm in 3 metres. the floor tile sare the only give away, but at 600 x...

    Earthing sockets

What are the rules on earthing the socket box? I have read such comments as 'if regulations require, attach earth between unit and backbox' I am using plastic drywall patresses. I am in Scotland. Do i need to earth the patresses? Do i need to sheath the earth wire if needed? thanks chaps!

    Quickest drying adhesive for skirting

what ive done in the past, which is of little help to you now, is to roll out a sheet of paper or plastic on the new floor, screw fix the skirting, paint the skirting, and then pulled out the paper afterwards. clean floor, fresh boards, and Robert is your mother's brother
