    i have attahced a photo of said fire place with the log burner in the aprox position it will be installed within the opening. As stated the finish is plasterboard dot and dabbed with sstandard skim. does this confirm your suspecions?

    tiling onto painted plasterboard

    I did that in my bathroom, dot and dabbed the brick with 12.5mm board, 1 coat of cheap emmulsion to stop excessive sucktion to the boards and tiled full height with wall tiles, not had any problems in 6 months!
