Diagram for finding a fault on a ring main

Well I managed to sort it last night. Turns out in one of the sockets that the ring had been disconnected so effectively we had 2 spurs powering the downstairs, and in the socket where the ring had been broken the live and neutral had been taped up but not very well and we're touching, so the...

Diagram for finding a fault on a ring main

I won't pretend i understand that last diagram :) i really haven't got my head around mains electrics and the science around shorts but i can do basic fault finding/connecting up. The problem appeared overnight one day, we woke up and it had tripped, however when i tried to turn it back on...

Diagram for finding a fault on a ring main

ah, of course after splitting the ring if theres a short it will show up by bridging the L N E wires with a multimeter in turn at the CU end won't it, doh! We had a sparky out a while ago as an emergency fix and he's basically unconnected half the ring as far as i can tell as its no longer...

Diagram for finding a fault on a ring main

I realise this is a VERY VERY old post, but i found RFLighting's diagram(s) extremely useful as i'm about to have a look at our ring main as its recently developed a tripping fault however i have one quick question. When you say Test each leg of the ring how eactly would you do that with a...

    Shower Arm Fitting Advice

I'm in the process of fitting a shower in our bathroom however i'm a bit stumped as to how to tackle fitting the shower arm/head. The shower arm came with a threaded section and large brass nut which i assumed i would need to tighten and it would clamp itself to the wall however the shower...

    Lime Plastering quote - reasonable?

No great secret about my career but it doesnt really have any relevance to my questioning your baseless remedial suggestion. Feel free to keep replying though as your pointless ramblings are amusing :) I forgot to ask, exactly how many old properties have you actually cured of damp by...

    Lime Plastering quote - reasonable?

Well it would appear I have more reasoning and technical backup to my approach (and the approach recommended by heritage experts rather than cowboys like your self trying to flog expensive unecessary work) hsve s look on sites like heritage house, spab etc if you need any more info (which it...

    Lime Plastering quote - reasonable?

So you've still not explained at all how a dpm under the floor will make any difference at all to damp in the walls. If anything fitting a Dpm under the floor would force any potential ground water under the building sidewsys and into the footings/walls even more, exacerbating the problem...

    Lime Plastering quote - reasonable?

Thanks for the reply Johnmelad Do you mind me asking if that price based on you being a professional plasterer? Or based on previous work youve had done? £2000/2500 works out at £35/40m2 rather than the £50 Ive been quoted. So my quote sounds on the high side at the mo.

    Lime Plastering quote - reasonable?

Joe prehaps youd like to enlighten everyone as to how fitting a dpm under the floor is going to stop damp penetrating sideways through the walls from raised paths surrounding the building. You clealy know something all the heritage experts don't

    Lime Plastering quote - reasonable?

It has nothing to do with the floors Its a grade 2 listed farm house with 600mm thick solid stone walls and high paths around the property causing penetrating damp. The paths around the propety don't drain well so hold water against the walls which penetrate through and has blown all the...

    Lime Plastering quote - reasonable?

As mentioned ive not had any luck getting decent tradesmen to quote for the job. I'm not sure what would be so difficult about saying whether or not £50/m2 is a reasonable quote or not for doing a 3 layer lime plastering over stripped stone walls or not. As said this price is purely for...
