    Quick Question Re Bell Box

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking a Texecom system is a safe bet so perhaps you could recommend a bell box that would go with that... The obvious option is this

    Quick Question Re Bell Box

Hi, I'm slowly running the cable, room by room, for my yet to be installed alarm system. I've come to the room where the alarm bell box will be situated and I want to run the necessary cable before having the room plastered. Question is, do I just need one 6 core cable to the bell box, or...

Fixing Insulation Backed Plasterboard to Plastered Wall

As title really... What's the best way to fix insulation backed plasterboard - I'm thinking of this stuff - to an already plastered wall. I want to avoid battoning as space is a premium. Can this be simply dot and dabbed? Thanks!

    insulation behind plasterboard

Thanks for those links. Looks like the stuff I'm going to need. One thing, and I can't see it on the website... Can this stuff be dot and dabbed directly onto an existing plastered wall? If not, what's the best way of securing it?

Cold Room - Cavity Wall Insulation not an option....

Hi, 1920's semi with no wall cavity... Our nursery room (9ft x 9ft) has two outside walls and a huge window. We had an oversized rad fitted when we upgrade the C/H but it is still extremely cold during winter. I'm about to get it re-plastered and decorate it and I'm thinking now is the...

New Door - Wooden or Composite?

We have an original 1920's front door surround made from timber with leaded/stained glass side and top lights. The door was replaced fairly recently and it's of a good quality, although it was evidently fitted by a blind man. In any case, with it being so draughty and because it's been hacked...

    Doors: Return to stain

Are you sure that's stain? If you scrape it with a sharp edge, what happens? I ask as I had very similar in my house and assumed it was stain. The Dip-n-Strip guy told me is was something called "scumble" (or similar) and was very common in houses of that age (mine in 1920). This scumble is...

Freezer In Garage - Too Hot?

Hi, We have a concrete pre-fab garage with a aluminium roof. It gets very hot in there during the summer. We've bought an upright freezer to live out there but I'm concerned we will be asking too mush of the freezer when it's like 40 degrees in there during the summer months. I was...

Up With the Burglars this Morning/Replacing Euro-ProfileLock

Thanks... OK, but you'd still have two keys to lock/unlock the door so, as you rightly say, will most likely end up using only one of them...

Up With the Burglars this Morning/Replacing Euro-ProfileLock

Can you tell me more about the nightlatch? Can you not open this from the inside if you pot the window? EDIT - do you mean one of these

Up With the Burglars this Morning/Replacing Euro-ProfileLock

I didn't actually meet the guy, but the quote simply says "5 lever deadbolt" so I'm presuming it's BS approved mortice. Yes, all windows are first generation uPVC which means they have awful, useless handles/locks. Yes, the price is surprisingly reasonable. I think they're subsidised by...

Up With the Burglars this Morning/Replacing Euro-ProfileLock

We had the police approved home security survey done yesteday. He advised the following: - Sash Jammers & locks on all windows (x9). - A second deadbolt lock fitted to the front door (already got a 5 lever mortice) - A latch & chain fitted to front door. All for the pricely sum of...

It's on the list...but then so is 300 other jobs that require significant investment.... I presume you mean a wooden door and and a mortice lock??

Paint isn't covering the caulk - what's the problem?

That Soudal stuff is absolute rubbish. I bought some after being horrified at what B&Q were charging for more well known makes (£6.50 for a tube of calk) when I got stuck one Sunday afternoon. It doesn't like being painted and looks awful, almost translucent, if left. Do yourself a favour...

Up With the Burglars this Morning/Replacing Euro-ProfileLock

Sadly, after spending 10 min on Youtube, I now have the knowledge of how to circumvent 9 out of 10 uPVC door locks.....easily. I dare say I could make a better job of it than the barsteward who tried mine on Saturday morning......

Up With the Burglars this Morning/Replacing Euro-ProfileLock

Thank... Didn't involve the insurance as I have a £150 excess in any case + the stitch up next year when I renew... I went to my local locksmiths and ended up with a Hoppe "Secured By Design" handle and a Multi-lock snap proof lock. Took me 10 mins to fit and it's all sorted now (I managed...

Up With the Burglars this Morning/Replacing Euro-ProfileLock

I was awoken this morning at 5AM by the pitter patter of a scum sucking burglar trying to force the lock on my side door. Luckily, for him, I disturbed him when I ran downstairs butt naked looking a bit like David Banner in mixed mode. As my feet touched the downstairs floor, he made off and I...
