    well when i put a peice of laminate over the area it covers the gap. Both in length and width. Its about an inch and a half smaller than the width of a laminate board. the length is about 4 inches shorter than a laminate board but the gap is directly infront of the hearth.

    thanks for your help mate. I think i may take the frame option, just make a frame that goes around all 3 edges of the hearth like you said. Any ideas on what type of wood to use for the frame/border. Obviously not too thick. It has to be relatively thin Thanks
