Drinking whilst in charge of a foetus

Most obstetricians would advise women not to drink more than one unit a day whilst pregnant and ideally not to drink alcohol at all. Obviously randomised trials on the effect of alcohol whilst pregnant don't exist but there are strong associations with reduced birth weight with mothers who...

    Toilet paper

kendor, not sure about the absorption bit but the jury is still out on vit E. Has been linked to preventing some cancers (prostate, lung, stomach, other bowel) and atherosclerosis but not enough evidence. How about a DIYNOT trial? Handyman tries vit E on his arse for a week and you try...

actually was a bit simpler than that but you got the right answer. it was just the number of vowels in the words spelling the numbers. silly I know  , but thought you code breaker types would figure it out. I'll give you a harder one next time.

    Asbestos

fitter - you might need to watch out with the anti-obesity police soon. They'll lock you up with just bread and water. of course you could always say you're a celebrity and you're doing the Atkins. On the smoking issue lisa, you are ten times more likely to develop lung cancer as a...

    Asbestos

There have been a few epidemiological studies looking at the different cumulative exposure levels and mortality/incidence of cancer. Two types of cancers are recognised. Lung cancer (cancer of the main airways) and mesothelioma (cancer of the lining around the lung). From the HSE paper...

Another reason why our country is going down the pan.

Well Done Adam, That one had me beat! :? I should have found a delinquent 6 year old to help me. On second thoughts I'd have probably got beaten up for being stupid. I couldn't figure out how 5 needed 2 strokes to write but I guess it depends on how you write it. Quite a sneaky one...

Blockage in cold water pipe ? related to leak next door

Have now sorted out the problem. The chaps working next door lied to me when they said they hadn't shut any valves! and lied that the problem was from the rising main! And their boss who apprently was supposed to be v knowledgable about the block was wrong when he said the bathroom...

    Limescale in toilet pan

vinegar is pretty effective on limescale but you might need quite a lot to work in the pan. But it's cheap. you can get proprietary limescale removers from most supermarkets which have a similar acidic action.

Blockage in cold water pipe ? related to leak next door

My girlfriend lives in a block of flats that were converted about 5 years ago. Yesterday evening about 7pm she lost the cold water supply to her bathroom. :( Interestingly at about the same time there was some work going on in the next door flat, which had developed a leak from the rising...

    Which trade costs the most?

Building Contractor - If I may take your surgical analogy a bit further. Are you aware that there is a nurse practitioner who is training to do simple inguinal hernia repairs? Would you be less happy being operated on by her(or him) than a fully qualified surgeon? Fundamentally if she...

Cosmology - Dr S Hawking programme

Actually I quite enjoy Crichton too although I haven't read Timeline and Prey - at least I can't remember them. Must be getting old  To be honest I haven't read a lot of cosmology books lately. Most of my reading tends to be journals and referrence books which are a guaranteed cure...

Cosmology - Dr S Hawking programme

Physics........a personal passion....Arghhh.....I definately have to get out more! :D educated? Not so much in DIY! But I think I'm getting better. I'm a scientist of sorts and have a strong background in the life sciences but am not too bad in maths and physics too. And what I...

    how to terminate laminate flooring

I think mild means that you should change the nose of the stair ( the extra bit that projects over the vertical bit of the stair) and make it taller and wider so that the laminate can go under a recessed bit of it. Could you not use a piece of laminate for this purpose and just create a nose...

Cosmology - Dr S Hawking programme

I'm afraid I didn't see the programme but perhaps I can help with the temperature question. We usually think of temperature on a large scale in terms of heat. But temperature can be thought of as a measure of the random motion of a group of particles. Their energy if you like. Part of...

    how to reduce condensation

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't most old houses still have patent chimneys - albeit with the fireplaces boarded up. Wouldn't it then be possible to place a simple air vent in these areas. Perhaps there are already vents in place but these have been blocked/papered over? Also I think most...

    Dear Breezer

I was sorry to hear about what happened to Tom Salter. Please accept my condolences also. Do you know any more about why he had a heart attack at such a young age? Did he have any children or siblings? Because if he did they should be checked for familial conditions that raise your risk...

    Another Off topic Discussion?

I can think of three. 1) The war of the world's broadcast that caused panic in the US when Orson Wells broadcast it on the radio with many believing that Martians were invading. 2) The Apollo Moon Landings which obviously really happened but many people have been fooled into thinking they...
