Sewer pipe through foundations - building regs

Hi, I have just started digging the trenches for the footings for my extension. There is a waste pipe that runs through the foundations as you will see in my picture (I couldn't rotate it so tip your head 90 degrees to the left). The pipe is the old clay style wastepipe, but when they originally...

How 'thin' can i make an external cavity wall?

Yes, the wall I'm joining to is a party wall. I like the idea of a 215mm wall and using insulating board all the way down, but I'd need pretty thick board and I'm trying to limit losing any internal space as most of the existing wall is the side of a 900mm wide corridor. Am I correct that...

How 'thin' can i make an external cavity wall?

ok, I won't sneak out over the boundary, but a 2cm overhang internally is more acceptable than a 5cm overhang on what should have been a flush surface. Still, if anyone can give me any advice on making the cavity wall as thin as possible that would be great.

How 'thin' can i make an external cavity wall?

How 'thin' can i make an external cavity wall and still meet the expected U rating of .28? The reason I ask is that the current side wall of my house is only 23cm thick so when the extension goes up the new wall will be about 5cm wider meaning that it will not run flush internally (I presume...

New toilet connection to sewage pipe - building regulations?

Hi, I'm not a plumber or a builder, but I am currently building an extension which includes a new shower and toilet. Building control told me that I had to contact my waste/foul water company responsible for my area (southern water) who said that if my sewer was classed as a public sewer and...

    Underfloor heating for new extension

Thanks Ban, I was going to put the heating mats on top of the wooden floor, not under it, then lay carpet over the top. Is that possible? I appreciate that they cost more to run but no one is home during the day when they are actually hot and by the time people are home in the evenings...

    Underfloor heating for new extension

Hi, I am having an extension built and need to heat a 3m x 3m room. I have no gas at my property so no 'central heating'. Just economy 7 storage heaters in the other rooms. I thought, that for simplicities sake that I could install a 150/200watt (pmsq) underfloor heating mat type system...

Build over permission - public sewer

WOW!!! a call to SW complaints seems to work wonders! I rang them and explained that I had spoken with OFWAT an The CCfW and that they had advised me to raise the complaint as above. The customer service agent seemed a little panicky and said she would discuss it with her team leader and...

Build over permission - public sewer

Thanks Hailsham, I spoke with the 'Consumer Council for water' who have said email a complaint to Southern Water stating that I believe that it is private at my end and that I believe they are just trying to charge me needlessly. This means they have to respond with a full reason as to why...

Build over permission - public sewer

The little rectangle outside the kitchen window is the manhole cover, sewer runs off diagonally to the bottom left. In order to keep the build cost down it has been proposed to building control that the manhole stays where it is but is replaced with a double skinned lockable sealed cover.

Build over permission - public sewer

That's what I thought Newboy, but building control and SW say it is a public sewer despite being at the head end. They have the same sewer map as me and they say that it is public. How do I argue this with them? I cant really move it out of the footprint of the extension as there isn't really...

Build over permission - public sewer

Heres an image of the sewer map. It looks to me that I'm at the head end, I just can't bare to part with £867 for a pen pusher to sign off something!

Build over permission - public sewer

Thanks Newboy, I'm in Southern Waters area too, my sewer is less than 225 and less than 3m below the surface. It's strange as the 'sewer' is right outside the back of my house, on the sewer plans from Southern Water it looks like a private sewer which I'm at the head end of (there's no one...

Build over permission - public sewer

Hi, I know this is probably a dumb question but I have planning permission for an extension to the rear of my property which will involve building over a minor public sewer. I understand that I need to get build over permission from Southern Water, but they are asking for £867.60 just to...
