wood worm and wet rot in loft

Found Quite a good guide to woodworm identification at http://www.safeguardeurope.com/pdf_datasheets/woodworm_guide.pd It says that Powder Post beatle attacks hardwood less than 15 years old. This is softwood about 50 years old. I'll try hoovering and checking if more dust develops, do you...

wood worm and wet rot in loft

If expert advice is needed then can you recommend anyone in the Milton Keynes area? I have some spray treatment that I was given by a friend of my dad's who is a joiner. He says it should be safe within an hour but the more I read the more unsure I become. If it helps then that one joist...

wood worm and wet rot in loft

Woodworm, the joist is 100x50mm which makes the holes about 1mm across. You can see the sawdust by the joint and the light area on the right is where i was able to just break the corner of the joist away with my fingers. The rot is shown here slightly obscured by a spider web, the extractor...

wood worm and wet rot in loft

Hi everyone i've just been ripping out some old boarding in my loft to have my insulation redone (the boarding was like a very soft thin chipboard or something and couldn't suport a persons weight making it quite dangerous) When I ripped it up I found a significant amount of woodworm in some...

    1 fan, 2 rooms

Technically you could do it by duplicating the wiring to both switches so that the switched live of the fan connects to both switched lives of the switches. Not sure how a PIR would affect it. Not sure if it is allowed within the regs Both switches should be on the switched side of one...

    Extension lead length

If you really want to avoid daisy chaining you can probably replace the flex. The leads I have have got a removable panel on them to access the terminals in the multi way head and replacing the flex is no more dificult than rewiring a plug. If yours also have access to the terminals you could...

Outside light - part p notifiable?

Cheers Guys I'll put it on the lighting circuit as I think that that is required for circuit segregation with the two gang switch, unless anyone is going to tell me different. I think it's plastic so no exposed conductive parts, so if I ever change the board then that should be no problem...

Outside light - part p notifiable?

Title says it all really :!: :) I'm planning on putting an outside light up by our front door, is it part P notifiable? I read it as adding a light to an existing circuit but thought I'd check with you lot as the fountain of all knowledge :) Also would it be sensible to have it RCD...

    cable choice for new downlights

You are correct, only reason to use earthed cable is future proofing. But it's much easier to connect the earths up now than use twin cable and have to rip it all out later if you have to change a fitting and it needs earthing

    Covering cables

Con directly vertically and horizontally from the sockets, switches etc plus within 150 mm from a vertical corner or the ceiling, but not within 150 mm of the floor

    cable choice for new downlights

I have been told the best way is to run regular twin and earth to a junction box for each light then use heat resistant cable to go to the light fitting. You can use cable with earth but at the light sheath it then terminate in chock block. This way if the lights are ever replaced by something...

    Covering cables

If in a safe zone then any depth is fine. Probably best not to have it so shallow that it pokes through the plaster though

    Whirlpool Bath

for the supplimentary bonding you will need to bond the pump to any other circuits that enter the bathroom. in this case that will presumably be the lighting circuit. Will you have a shaver socket? If so and it is on a different ring or lighting circuit then this needs bonding too If all...

    Spotlights in the bathroom

There is a note in the regs about communal showers cleaned by water jets, I presume you don't clean your bathroom in this was so don't worry. I guess it may be more applicable say in your local leisure centre

    Spotlights in the bathroom

From looking for a replacement for our bathroom pendant light (which was dangling away unprotected in zone 3 when we bought the place) most lights suitable for use in zones actively advertise the fact on the box and specifically state which zones they can be used in.

    Bathroom Extractor - switching issue

I have done this with my timer fan too. Here's how to do it, according to the instructions that came with mine. replace your pullcord with a double pole pullcord, use one pole for the light. from your double pole switch live outgoing terminal run the phase conductor of twin and earth to...

    Black and red T&E

Yeah I emptied our loft at the weekend cos we are having the insulation redone. I pulled out a few lengths of no longer used copper and iron gas/water pipes and left them at the side of the house. They were there sunday night, some bugger had nicked them by tuesday morning by the time I went to...

metal light fittings - no earth?

The stuff like bell cable wasn't silicone sheathed instead of pvc was it? this has higher rating I think.
