Anyone know what this coating is? It's on a chalet bungalow, circa 1970, and the walls are rendered breeze block. The render's all solid, but areas where the paint is bubbling up have this failing coating under the paint. It's about 4mm thick.

To be fair this jack has behaved a lot better today and given me much more control. I'm hoping it's just getting run in! I'll give it a chance, it will be quite a nuisance to return it. Thanks all.

Isn't it the inner joints on front wheel driveshafts that allow for the plunge? Ie, joints that use bearings rather than 6 balls? As in this image? And bearing in mind (pun alert) that the angles are nowhere near as extreme as the outer joints.

Exactly! This one seem to stick for a while and then suddenly give. Not very impressive, I think it'll have to go back if I can't sort it.

I know what you mean about Halfords, but I've always found their pro range pretty good, and I've had one of their smaller jacks for about 25 years and it's been great.

Ok, here's some photos which hopefully show the slight differences in the cage sides. The first two are assembled in both ways, minus the balls of course, the second two show the slight chamfer on one side. I think they are ok either way personally. :)
