    The cable is black, very thick tough casing approx 16mm in diameter. He returned the earth via this cable to house cu as well as using an earth rod next to workshop. I can get the info printed on the side of the cable if this helps?

    Sorry Sparkwright I don't think I explained myself well! Its a ring circuit in the workshop, 2.5mm its currently on a 16amp as he bought a Mk garage unit and this was the highest. With the intention of swapping to a 32 amp asap. As you 've suggested the air compressor will run of the 16amp so...

    thanks Sparkwright, I think the cost saving of the free cable warped his mind! Its the cable I think they use in the street. It is under a concrete driveway all the way to workshop, but not ideal. Are you suggesting moving feed to non rcd side of house CU?

    the sockets in the workshop are on a ring circuit 2.5mm cable

    the earth both runs back to the house CU and is earthed at the workshop end via an earth rod.

    thanks Sparkwright we will change air compressor to 16 amp breaker will leave cable as 2.5mm twin and earth.

    the cable is not SWA its been put in condulit and in a trench about 4ft down. Its about 120ft from house to workshop and he put an extra earth rod at workshop end.

    The cable to the workshop I think its 16mm. In fact slightly larger than the cable coming in to the house from the lane! His pal bought it around on his way home from work, and cut it of a wooden drum on his trailer. If you need more info i'll give him a ring thanks for quick reply
