    Tooling: Modulo screwdriver heads.

Do any of you Pro's bother buying these specialist Modulo type screwdrivers. They seem to be a cross between a Phillips/Pozi drive and a Plain slot drive. I have noticed that more and more electrical screws seem to have these hybrid heads on them though. I'm increasingly finding that it is...

PIR controlled Cat deterrent - what would you fit ....

I've decided to get one of them jet spray thingies that you attach to a hose pipe, they look good fun and are battery operated. If any of my two cats come in looking wet and bedraggled when the weather is dry and fine outside then i'll know it is them and give them a good thrashing too....

Guy came round this morning nice and early and had the job all done within about an hour. Sparky cvoming round next week to fit my new consumer unit so hopefully that will be me all sorrted for a few years now. I got a new digital meter, Neutral block and Isolator fitted, here's a before...

PIR controlled Cat deterrent - what would you fit ....

OK perhaps just for fun, but I have recently noticed that after getting the trench dug for my shed power supply the local cats and more than likely my own 2 ! ( or more accurately my wifes 2 cats :) ) have been using the now bare flower bed that the trench was dug through as a toilet, as you...

    security Lights on a PIR

What area are yopu actually trying to light up ? Do you really need to have 500 watt units ? I have 3 PIR controlled floodligts at the back of my house. They are small 150 watt units, however one of my neighbours (very nicely) mentined to my wife that one of them lights up one of their...

When a Consumer Unit Overheats/Burns Out etc....

Does the reg stipulate a minimum time frame between deciding to replace each single 'damaged' circuit. One every 10 years , or one every 10 minutes - what's the difference...

Weatherproofing an outdoor socket outlet cable entry

I am going to add an outdoor socket outlet to the wall of my wooden shed. The socket outlet will be at the end of a short ( approx 2 metre max ) radial circuit of 4mm T&E protected by a 20A MCB and 30mA RCD. The socket outlet assy is rated at IP55. I have a waterproof 20mm Glandseal that i...

Voltstick type wiring detectors - any recommendations ?

Can anybody recommend a voltstick type live wiring detector that isn't too sensitive and can pinpoint hidden live wires behind plasterboard fairly accurately. I do have one that I use at work as a quick checker to see if the windsreen heaters on the Aircraft that i work on are working, but...

    Testing, testing...

I seem to be getting some mixed results, but specifically from two RCD's of the same Model/Manufacturer . ( Power Breaker bought from B&Q a few years ago). Basically the fixed RCD in my Garage CU and two Plug in adaptors were within limits and did what i was expecting according to the...

    Testing, testing...

One of the adaptors that failed is the type that you cut off the original BS plug and replace it with an RCD Plug , rather than a plug in adaptor. I like to think that i'm quite particular about this type of thing, however my wife and kids aren't perhaps quite so dilligent. I'd rather the...

    Testing, testing...

I recently invested in a new Megger RCD tester , and then set about checking some of the RCD's that i own. My house doesn't currently have a Modern RCD protected Consumer Unit, I'm having one fitted in the next week or so. The new Garage CU in my shed works perfectly and passes all of the...

    Energy Saving Bulbs Wattage

One the subject of Energy saving light bulbs. For years I had a problem with ordinary tungsten light bulbs failing in my house. It didn't matter what brand i tried, from the cheapest Tesco 'blue stripy' bulbs, to more expensive branded items , e.g. Osram, G.E. etc. sometimes that would only...

    Whoops - armoured cable

Is sleeving the inner cores in this manner just a usual convention, or is it law ? The reason that i ask is that i have also installed some SWA and found it to be Brown , Black and Grey once i stripped it back. I have used Blue and G/Y heatshrink tubing to sleeve it, however my thought...

Posh Shed at the end of the Garden

Roy, I have used one of the Volex 50A Shower CU items mentioned in your OP. It was something that i bought but never used until now. The actual casing is slightly flimsy and will not take an SWA gland, however it is perfectly usable as a Garage or shed CU with a few adaptions, for my...

Internal wiring for a shed, garage or outbuilding.

Drove past my local wholesaler today and saw that their retail shop was open on a Saturday afternoon ! As i had to drive past anyway i stopped & Popped in just to see how much some of that rectangular snap together trunking would cost , and 10 minutes later walked out with 6 meters of 25 x...

Getting an Isolator fitted (or not !) what a palaver...

I got back onto my supplier and they have arranged a new appt, unfortunately I'll still have to wait, despite my moaning I am getting a new meter fitted in the new position, plus the isolator , plus a neutral block. The guy will be fitting all 25mm tails on 'their' side. The consumer side...

Internal wiring for a shed, garage or outbuilding.

A 4 month old, sound , leak free, dry, secure building. Hmmm... I suppose anything is possible. If i was particularly clumsy. One small single window, facing north with no cable in direct sunlight at any time , even with the door open. I've never seen , or found evidence of rats at my...

Internal wiring for a shed, garage or outbuilding.

with reference to Home domestic , (not industrial or agricultural) installations. Is it OK to use clipped Twin & Earth cable for the exposed, fixed, internal wiring installation in a shed, garage, or similar garden outbuilding. I can see that it would be good practice to install conduit...

Electric cable size for outside shed

I can see that all circuits inside the shed would need to be RCD protected, can you just confirm that the actual supply to the shed has to be RCD protected too ? If the shed has a 30ma trip RCD consumer unit in it , what sort of MCB, RCD or RCBO can be used to protect the shed supply cable...

Terminating tools for SWA cable - what do you use ?

Thanks for the info guys. The Kew Technik tool looks great, but costs too much for my modest and infrequent needs. I don't mind paying top dollar for good tools that i really need ( or just want :) ) In this case though , I'll just buy a new pack of blades for my Junior hacksaws.
