Hi Guys,
I have a problem! I am making a floor with reclaimed scaff boards into 2x5 joists.
I love the look and apparent superior grip of cut brad nails but can only find them in 65mm. That would be perfect for normal floors but as the scaff boards are 35mm (after sanding), I am concerned that...
Hi All,
I am converting my garage into a living space (permitted development).
The current floor is an un-insulated concrete slab with a 2" slope
My current plan is as follows:
Damp proof membrane directly on the slab.
Then 50mm foil backed Celotex.
Then a screed to level the...
I am not making any structural changes and the garage is fully detached. I do not see how having an insulated garage will be seen as worse that having an un-insulated garage! It can only be a positive. Keeping the garage doors etc (insulating them though!)
If it did cause a problem at sale I...

Just as an update, I tanked down as far as the DPC with two coats of KT Tanking Slutty but was still getting white marks and patches on top of the slurry.
I decided to bridge the DPC with the slurry so the tanking now goes all the way to the floor and about three inches on to the floor aswell...
A point well made. Sounds like I will have to reach a little deeper into my pockets then!
Pretty sure the roof is waterproof. I will get the electrics done to spec by a sparky friend of mine. It look like the roof ventilation can be fitted whenever so I will save that job for later.
Are...
Would that detract from the value or just not add to it?
As you might have guessed, I am 26 on my first house, have only ever worked in an office and am pretty much making it up as I go. Thank god for the forums!!!
If I do 75mm between the rafters and 50mm below (including plasterboard) will this be okay?
This comes to £512 so £100 extra in total sounds like it will be well worth while!
I could go for 65mm below which will meet your specifications but totle cost then will be £550. It's beginning to hurt!
I agree however I do not want to detract from the value of the house when I could add to it.
Would you recommend going all out with regs insulation wise then (it is in my own house and I have no immediate plans to sell up).
If I need to need a 50mm air gap then I can only go 75mm between...
Jesus - thats a lot of insulation.
Sod regs then. Would I be spending massive amounts on heating with my current plan? Would I actually notice the difference anyway?
It also depends on the branch. I have a smaller one next to me and I get a discount off some items with the card at the checkout but for other items they tell be I have to drive to the other side of Bristol to the larger store to get the price online/in catalog.
Why cant these people just be...
Hello All,
I am trying to work out the best was to insulate a pitched garage roof for conversion into a general purpose room.
The roof is currently tialed and felted and made of 5" (130mm) beams.
I am looking as insulating with insulation board (celotex etc)
I understand that I have...
Thanks Fred. I already started with the tanking though - I couldn't wait to get started! It might be overkill but I enjoy the work so I don't mind. I have stopped at the DPC and left it bare on the bottom course to the floor. I will then tape the DPM to the wall above the DPC as advised by your...
