EV Charging from a 13A Socket

Thanks for clearing that up. Still dithering between a 13A socket and a wall box. £1,000 represents a lot of kWh!

EV Charging from a 13A Socket

Now I am confused. Do you include Octopus Energy under this category? Quote: Your new EV charger will be connected directly to your electricity meter

EV Charging from a 13A Socket

No, but the wall box would. There is room on the front of the garage for a socket but not for a wall box and a coiled tethered lead. It would have to go on the side. I may be wrong but I understand they are cabled directly from the meter box?

EV Charging from a 13A Socket

OK. But if I do eventually go for a full EV, I would get a proper wall box which would have to go in a different location - and wouldn't be wired via the CU?

EV Charging from a 13A Socket

Yes exactly the plan. Although in deference to Flameport's comments on the Masterplug socket, I might use something different such as an MK Masterseal Plus unswitched socket or even a timer fitted version with a Type A 20A RCBO at the CU. Cost actually not much different - the Masterplug unit...

EV Charging from a 13A Socket

I take the point re the socket and RCBO; i thought it was a bit pricey. Interested as to why you suggest 6mm2 cable. The charger (which is actually part of the car) is limited to 10A specifically to protect a 13A socket so is 2.5mm2 not enough? Or is the charging time (say 5hrs continuous) a...

EV Charging from a 13A Socket

According to the minor works certificate for some recent electrical work, it is TN-C-S. So replacing the MCB in the non RCD CU with an RCBO would serve?

EV Charging from a 13A Socket

I have read previous posts under similar headings which refer to 'mythical EV sockets' but no-one seems to have seen them. So here goes on my particular issue: I have just bought a plug in hybrid car (PHEV) which has a 15.6kWh battery as well as a petrol engine, with an electric range of about...

    Gas pipe damaged by fencers!

Exactly! Any fencing contractor's QA should have a utilities check as a first step. (They were QA'd?....) Utility entry from the back of the property is unusual but a brief inspection and trial dig would clarify. I suggest this should be down to the contractor.......

    Microbore pipe - complete garbage?

I thought my house built 1997 had microbore heating but I was relieved to be told that it was actually 15mm but the builder (a big national) thought it would look neater to install a reducer just behind the plasterboard and bring the flow and return out to the valves in 10mm. As we chop and...

    Shower Pump Problem

Apologies for the length of this, but I am looking for some advice here, although I don't hold out much hope. I had a Stuart Turner 2.5 bar shower pump installed in a ground floor extension bathroom just over 5 years ago. The pump has packed up (motor burned out). To be fair, ST would have...

    US Lamp

Going back to bulbs, this thread reminds me that I have a couple of table lamps, bought in Hong Kong years ago but possibly of US origin which have a 3 position rotary switch on the (E27) bulb holder: Off/ON Filament 1/ON Filament 2. Obv this controlled a twin filament bulb that the lamps were...

    Fluorescent batten starter

Very good point. Since the shed light failed, I realise that I have four fluorescent fittings in my garage. Three have old fashioned externally accessible starters, one doesn't so must be 'electronic' internally. Two of them have been there since the house was built 27 years ago (we moved...

    Fluorescent batten starter

Thanks all for responses. Looks like I need a new LED batten. I guess this is good for the planet but a bit miffed that a £1 starter turns into a £20 new fitting! That's called progress!

    Fluorescent batten starter

The problem being, there isn't one! Turned the shed light on the other night. there was a loud 'phut' and no light. I thought the shed circuit had tripped but the power side is on and I have confirmed power at the batten. I expected to fit a new starter switch but times have changed. There...

    Retro-fit Cavity Wall Insulation

I had completely forgotten abut this thread Fortunately the forum auto-advised me of your message. No, I never did go ahead. I had a contractor to quote but there was difficulty accessing some of the walls from the outside - for example a ground floor extension and an integral garage block...

    Shower Pump on the blink

Thanks for this, I'll see what I can diagnose. Plumber may well be right but reluctant to chuck away a pump on the basis of a quick look. Regards M

    Shower Pump on the blink

Thanks Rob. I have a multi-meter and I am happy testing mains voltage. Can you enlarge on the tests you suggest? M

    Shower Pump on the blink

Thanks all for advice. I have tried replacing the capacitor but to no effect. The plumber I called barely gave it glance, pronounced it burned out and has gone off to quote me for a new pump. [I have established that it it just over 5 years old so out of warranty - it is in a guest room so...

    Shower Pump on the blink

I have a Stewart Turner Monsoon 2.0hp shower pump about 4-5 years old. It has suddenly stopped working. The shower still works under gravity and there is a low hum from the pump as it does so. (I thought initially that this was the pump trying to run but it happens when the pump is switched...
